I have a maytag mav3855aww washing machine. Last night the washer made a clunking noise and smelled of smoke. I noticed that the agitator was not moving at all. I replaced the belt and noticed today that the washer will either not spin or will stop spinning after a minute or two. The agitator will move in the spin cycle and will continue to move when the tub stops. I looked under the machine and the belt and pullys are moving just fine and the motor is moving everything as it should; the tub just won't move!

Travioso, there was two service flashes out on this model concerning the seal and bearing which means they had an issue with this washer. The howling noise you are hearing is the bearing and will need the new designed triple seal and bearing kit. This should be covered under your warranty, I believe it is 5 years. The numbers for the service flashes are TDL-0048A-B. Call Maytag and inquire about these service flashes, these should be covered. Catriver.

You can't tight up the tub. You should replace the damper pads that located beneath main support housing on base's machine. Goog luck !

Its probably you stator plate and rotor. But you need special tools for this repair. There a spring that is under 200 pounds of pressure and if you take the screws off that hold the plate its going to fly into you face if your dont use the special tools to depress the spring. Is it more of a clanking kinda of noise? DOes it olnly happen with heavy loads? Try this out. Fill the washer with water only. and get it into a wash cycle with water only. If there is no noise then put in like a load of towels. A heavy load. Now if you hear the noise now then its for sure you stator plate and rotor..hope this helps, but like i said you need those special tools to do this repair or injury can result from the spring part.
