I have a Briggs & Stratton Vanguard 16 HP motor. It idles fine and it runs OK at high RPMS. But it backfires thru the carburetor during accelerating. Any suggestions?

On some float-type carburetors, you can adjust the air-fuel mixture and engine speed at idle. Check for an idle speed screw designed to keep the throttle plate from closing completely, and an idle mixture screw that limits the flow of fuel at idle. If your carburetor contains these screws, proceed below.
  1. With the engine off, remove the air filter and air cartridge.
  2. Locate the idle mixture screw and turn it clockwise until the needle lightly touches the seat. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1-1/2 turns.
  3. If your carburetor has a main jet adjustment screw at the base of the float bowl, turn the screw clockwise until you feel it just touch the seat inside the emulsion tube. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1 to 1-1/2 turns. Replace the air cleaner assembly and start the engine for final carburetor adjustments.
  4. Run the engine for five minutes at half throttle to bring it to its operating temperature. Then, turn the idle mixture screw slowly clockwise until the engine begins to slow. Turn the screw in the opposite direction until the engine again begins to slow . Finally, turn the screw back to the midpoint.
  5. Using a tachometer to gauge engine speed , set the idle speed screw to bring the engine to 1750 RPM for aluminum-cylinder engine or 1200 RPM for engine with a cast-iron cylinder sleeve.
  6. With the engine running at idle , hold the throttle lever against the idle speed screw to bring the engine speed to "true idle." Then, repeat the idle mixture screw adjustments from Step 4 to fine-tune the mixture .

Can't start chainsaw

Walter:

gently run the fuel and air mixture screws on the carburetor all the way closed (clockwise).then turn them out one and a quarter turns each. That setting should allow the saw to start if you are getting fuel to the carburetor. Once the saw starts, make fine adjustments to the fuel/air mixture screws until the saw runs to your satisfaction.

Need owner or service or both manuals for Homelite model #UT10516

Robert:

As far as the manuals... you might be able to download them at http://www.homelite.com. (you can click on the link) under customer service, you'll find "owner's manuals). To adjust the fuel/air mixture, start the saw and turn the adjustment screws in or out a little at a time until you get the saw running properly. There is no "set" adjustment... as the saw motor ages, those settings will change. If you make adjustments to the fuel/air screws and the saw stops running and starting, turn the adjustment screws all the way in (clockwise) GENTLY... If you force those screws you will damage the needle valve seats! Turn both screws out one and a quarter turns out, and the saw will start. continue adjusting until the saw runs properly. Have patience... it may take a while to get the saw running to your satisfaction.

How do i set air on husky 435 saw to fix boggy runnin

Mitch:

Adjust the fuel and air mixture screws while the saw is running... you'll find that "sweet spot"... it just takes a little patience! Small adjustments... If you over adjust and the saw quits running or starting, GENTLY turn both screws in all the way (don't damage the needle valves or seats) and turn both out one and a quarter (1 1/4) turns out. The saw should start, then adjust from there.

Running poor

Charlie:

You may have to adjust the fuel/air mixture on the carburetor. There are two small screws right next to each other on the carburetor. you should be able to see them without removing any cowlings. use a jeweler's screwdriver to adjust one or the other (or possibly both).
The adjustments are fine...and remember which way and how much you turned which screw so you can return to the previous setting. If you adjust enough so that the saw quits running altogether, you can GENTLY bottom both screws, then turn each one out one and a quarter turns. The saw will start... then you can continue to find the adjustment that will make the saw run properly.

My engine will start while the choke is on but it stalls out immediately after i cannot find the solution.

It sounds like the air fuel mixture screws are set too lean, which means that the engine is getting too much air not enough fuel. It runs with the choke on because the choke restricts the air that is allowed thru the carburetor. You will need to locate the two small adjustment screws. It will be much easier if you secure the saw in a vise of some sort making sure that the chain can move freely. With the engine running, slowly turn the air mixture screw clockwise and the engine should begin to die. At this point you will need to begin to open the choke because you are richening the mixture. Very small increments will make alot of difference so move a little at a time until it runs without the choke. Then make your adjustments to fine tune using both adjustments at low rpm and at high rpm.

Saw will start an run short period and stop.Only start when adding gas directly into carberator. This is a Poulan 16 chain saw.

If it is a old saw it sounds like your engine seals are failing. when a engine seal fails it allows air in past the crank upsetting your fuel mixture You could try to richin the fuel mixture by turning the screw marked H anticlockwise a quarter at a time untill it runs Ps to set (h) screw to factory, screw it in til it stops then unscrew it 1 & 1/2 turns

ADJUSTING THE IDLE SPEED AND MIXTURE

  4. Run the engine for five minutes at half throttle to bring it to its operating temperature. Then, turn the idle mixture screw slowly clockwise until the engine begins to slow. Turn the screw in the opposite direction until the engine again begins to slow (image A). Finally, turn the screw back to the midpoint.
  5. Using a tachometer to gauge engine speed (image B), set the idle speed screw to bring the engine to 1750 RPM for aluminum-cylinder engine or 1200 RPM for engine with a cast-iron cylinder sleeve.
  6. With the engine running at idle (image D), hold the throttle lever against the idle speed screw to bring the engine speed to "true idle." Then, repeat the idle mixture screw adjustments from Step 4 to fine-tune the mixture (image C).
