Replacing the cam-stack in my Viking 6440

1. A couple of the seam formers won't stay in, so I think the cam-stack needs to be replaced. How can I confirm this, and if so, is it something I can do myself? 2. Why would one seam former work, and others not? 3. If I can do this myself, where can I get the section of the repair manual to reference how to do this including pictures?

The cam stack can come out quite easily but putting it back in has some danger to it. The screw that holds the mechanism guide pin is somewhat tricky to get back in and if you cross the threads you've ruined your machine because the part is no longer available that the srew goes through. If you cross the threads it pitches the guide and your dial on the front of the machine that selects the different stitches won't work. If you shine a light in the back of the machine you can see it the camstack is cracked.

Can't get seam former out

To remove the seam former (stitch pattern cam).

- Move your stitch selection dial so the white dot on the dial lines up with the red dot on the body of the machine. Then you pull the cam out.

It can be difficult to remove if the cam has been sitting in the machne for a long time.

I have a 6440 from 1976. It was my mother's. Everything spins, but the gears aren't connecting and the needle isn't moving at all.

I think it is bobbin winding mode. Take a look at the hand wheel, check for a inner knob and turn it the other way. Sometimes on later models it was a switch type thing you flipped.

Now... lets talk about WD40. WD stands for water displacement. It is NOT a lubricant. When it\'s all freed up in there... wipe that stuff out and oil. DO NOT LEAVE THAT stuff IN THERE.

I own a Viking Husqvarna 6440 sewing machine. I

The feed dogs are not working in conjunction with needle because of the bulk. The bulkiness especially at the seams causes a shift under the pressure foot and the bobbin spins off excessive thread. When you get to the seam, you need to raise the presser foot so it goes over the seam evenly. Get a jeanajig or use something that will level off the presser foot as it goes over and as it comes off the seam. Also trim some of the bulk off before you fold the hem over to sew it.

Viking 6000 (model 6440)sewing machine - replacement motor

a quick check on your motor. If it gave a lot of smoke and really thick and heavy oily smell all of a sudden, then your capasitor blew. your machine can work without it. Test your machine to see if it still work as normal. Your motor is still good then and only needs replacing fo the capasitor. This is a common problem!!

Looking for replacement cam

I found out that the cams for the 6000 series are no longer available through Viking repair or dealers. I will check on eBay to see if anyone has parts available there.

Husqvarna Viking 6440 buttonholer, reverse frozen

A seller on e-bay who redoes Viking machines says the the grease they put in them (the older vikings) becomes too stiff and the knobs stop turning. He cleans them out and then he adds some kind of teflon lubricant. Probably can find him on e-bay still. He is informative.
