My iBook G4 Mac Notebook is displaying a window that says "you need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart Button." I have attempted both these solutions, but neither has worked. Help!

I have unplugged the charger and taken out the battery. This didn't work. i have reset the computer in accordance with the instructions of holding down the shift, control, option and power buttons at the same time. This didn't work, either.

Your solution worked. thank you. how do you run system tests?

I accepted your solution. However, after the system rebooted, after about 5 minutes, the restart window popped up again.  I guess this means I need to reload the operating system

Looks like you've experienced what's known as a "kernel panic" ... If you have your OS install disc, launch your ibook with the disc inserted while holding down the c key... once launched, from the menu, choose the disk utility to repair your hard disk... That should solve your issue...

Shut the power off for 5 min's, I mean remove the battery, then restart, then run system tests, if this fails the operating system is corrupted (reload operating system) or the hard drive has failed

Hi

Try holding down the power button untill the computer turns off.

if that doesn't work, unplug the charger and then unplug the battery from the unit.

place the battery and the charger back after 1 minute and check that the computer is working normally.

let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks,
Ekse

Reset button on a powerbook g4

The Powerbook G4 power button functions like a reset button if you hold the power button in for a few seconds until the computer powers down.
  1. Hold the power button in for a few seconds (until you see the screen turn off/go black and hear the fans & hard drive stop spinning).
  2. Press the power button again to turn your computer on.
  3. If you have more trouble, you may need to boot in Safe Mode or "perform a Safe Boot":
Press and hold down the "Shift" key immediately after you hear the start-up tone. Release the "Shift" key when the gray Apple icon appears on the screen.

My ibookG4 says "you need to restart your computer..." different languages and that's all it will do after the chime.

Have your tried to reset the p-ram? Turn on your Mac and immediately press and hold the Option + Command + P + R keys. You must press the keys before the gray screen appears. Continue to hold the keys until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound a second time.
Hope this helps

I have a cd stuck in my laptop computer. It's a iBook G4. The cd tray doesn't come out. there is a mechanism that helps to push the cd out. I dont know the best way to get it out. Please help!! E

Option 1:
If you restart the computer and just after it restarts if you hold down the eject key on the keyboard it should eject the disc, if not I would check to see if there is a tiny hole on the disc drive that you can stick a paper clip in - not sure if the ibook will have it but worth while checking.

Option 2:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Immediately after the startup sound, press and hold the key
combination Command-Option-O-F.
Note: The Command key has the Apple icon on it.
3. Release the keys when you see a white screen that says "Welcome to
Open Firmware."
4. At the prompt, type: eject cd
5. Press Return, then wait a few seconds. The disc drive should eject any disc that is present, and "ok" appears behind your command when the
action is complete.
6. Type: mac-boot
7. Press Return.

When i turn on the mac it come up to the apple, then a cmd prompt is in the left side and I cannot seem to get past this, i cannot even shutdown, unless i hold the power button or remove the battery...any...

You have a firmware problem and it needs to be reset.
try this first: If the computer is on, turn it off. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
Wait 5 seconds.
Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.

If that doesn't work, try this: Turn the laptop off. Remove the battery but leave the mains power attached. Hold the start button down until you hear a loud beeeeep! then release. Wait for the system to reboot and hopefully thats you sorted.

Describe your cannot start ibook G3Problem it simply does not start, battery is ok and I have tried to take the battery away and back in its place, but nothing what can I do?

Make sure your iBook is plugged in to the wall. Hold down the power button for a few seconds. If that doesn't work, try holding down Command (the Apple key)-Option-P-R (hold all four keys down) and press the power button. Be sure to hold the power button for a few seconds whenever you turn it on.

If that doesn't work, try resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU). This is kind of a "last resort," according to Apple. Don't do this all the time.
  1. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
  2. Wait 5 seconds.
  3. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.
If you have a very old iBook, you may have to unplug your iBook, remove the battery, and
  1. Press and release the reset button located above the Audio/Video port on the left side of the iBook (Dual USB) computer by inserting the end of a paper clip into the small hole and gently pressing the switch once.
  2. Wait 5 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the AC power adapter.
  4. Put the battery back in the computer.
  5. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.
(If it still doesn't start, do you hear the fans going?)

Good luck! Let us know if these steps solve your issue.

Computer won't show start up screen, only shows different colors ie. green, then pink, blue... i took out the battery and started it without the battery and got the same results.

First you need to reset the PRAM:
  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
  6. Release the keys.
Next you need to reset the PMU (power management unit). This will depend on the model of your iBook so follow the instructions on Apples page:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431#faq6

Hope this gets you going again

All the best

Stuck on the restart your computer screen.

You may have installed something in the startup items folder that your mac isn't liking.
When you turn the iBook on, press the shift key as soon as you hear the startup tone. hold it down until you see the gray apple screen. This will get you into safe mode, hopefully then you'll be able to fix whatever you did from there. If you are still at a loss, get in touch.

To reboot a Mac laptop, go to the Apple logo in the top left hand corner, and click "Restart". If your computer is unresponsive, press and hold the power button for about ten seconds.
