No you don't have to.
Take the cartridges out from the printer, let it be without the cartridges for a moment, even turn off and turn on your computer. then do the same to the printer.
place in the cartridges back.
see if the error is still there.
Press setup button on the printer
select maintenance from the menu and press ok
select nozzle check from the menu and ok again
you should get a nozzle check pattern from the printer, it should have different color lines on it, few going vertically and others horizontally (they are not actually horizontal they are kind of )
check that you have all the colors and that the lines are not broken. see below
if the print is broken. or colors are missing, then first perform a print head cleaning before replacing anything.
you may have to perform the cleaning 3 times to get good results.
now if something is missing, replace the cartridge that didn't produce the color.
if all printed fine then the issue is on the computer.
try to get rid of the installed drivers and software on your mac.
you may use this program to help you do that, do the following: reset the printing system, repair permissions and uninstall / delete the epson drivers.
when you are done restart the mac and use the cd that came with it or get them from here
ones you have installed everything back print a page it should work normally.

Dont use CIS or refills. The chips are designed to "self destruct" when the ink registers empty. Since a CIS is designed to never register empty, it usually works but if you let it run empty, or the printer decides its empty anyway, the chip gets that signal and then you run into this problem. If you want to save money, buy brand new compatible cartridges.

Check printer, is it ready/online ? Do a test via keypad of printer and see if printer is ok.
If printer is ok then check again cable that goes from it to PC
If printer is not working, check for error lights,display,paper,jams.
