Open the hood and look for either a red handle for a dipstick or one marked trans. Remove the dipstick and ,with a funnel, pour the fluid into the tube the dipstick came out of.

I changed the fluid and filter on my 1997 dodge 1500 and the same day the transmission stopped shifting gears....what could be the problem?

it is possible you either did not add enough fluid, added too much fluid, or the fluid you replaced the old with was the wrong type for the trans. was there a problem with the trans before you replaced the trans fluid? make sure that when you change the trans fluid you are working on a flat surface. if you pull/check the dipstick while the truck is on jack stands, or otherwise elevated, you reading will be off. and you may find that after pouring in the new fluid and setting the truck down to test drive and circulate the new fluid that you have put too much fluid in the pan. this will show up as bubbles on the dipstick, or fluid coming out of the fill tube. also make sure the fluid you use is the right type. chrysler transmissions require different fluid than ford, or chevy. though you did not specify if your trans is manual, or automatic.

its a 5 speed, there is not dipstick. there is a fill plug on the side of the tranny you remove to check fluid level, level should be just below the opening.

The type best used is "Genuine Subaru Automatic Transmission Fluid Type-HP or IDEMITSU ATF HP. you add it through the dip stick hole. You may also wish to add a transmission leak oil to swell the gaskets and stop the leak add it the same way if you choose to use it. both of these should be available at your local auto parts store like NAPA. 1997 Chevrolet 1500 transmission

It varies a bit depending on the tranny, safest way is to buy a couple 1-gallon jugs to be sure you have enough. (Be sure to catch all the fluid that comes out) After putting in the first gallon to replace it, fill the empty jug, then fill it again and put that much of the 2nd jug in. (This is for doing the pan drop, filter change, refill, likely to be more if you do a complete system drain).
