Options for installing Windows on old laptop with broken CD drive

I can get the CD drive open, but there is a rail missing from one side. When I put a CD into the drive it will not function. Also, to open the drive I have to use a paperclip.

What other options do I have for reinstalling Windows XP on this machine? The only thing I have with me right now are two external USB drives. I do not have an external CD drive. Is there any way I can install Windows on this old HP pavilion ze5200 without replacing the CD drive?

You have to install Windows or other operating system on the new hard drive before you can use it. If you already installed it, then it means Windows got corrupted. You can try to Repair your Windows using the Windows installation CD (for Repair choose R when prompted). You can let the automatic repair to try and fix it, if that doesn't work upon restart reboot and start the Repair again, but this time select Command Prompt or Console and put in "bootrec /rebuildbcd" without the quotes. If you don't have Windows installation CD you can try downloading Hiren's Boot CD and try to fix the bootmgr with the utilities from the disc: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

BOOTMGR is missing, CD drive not working

Turn off the computer and wait at least 5 seconds with the computer in a full off state.
Turn on the computer and press the F8 key repeatedly as the computer starts. An "Advanced Boot Options" screen opens.
Select Repair Your Computer and press Enter.
Select a keyboard layout that matches your country/region and click Next.
When the login prompt appears, select the user name with Administrator rights (not Administrator) from the User Name drop down. The user name with Admistrator rights is most likely the first user name that was entered during the initial computer setup.
Type the logon password into the Password field and then click OK.
A System Recovery Options window opens.
Type Bootrec /RebuildBcd, and then press ENTER.
• If the Bootrec.exe tool runs successfully, it presents you with an installation path of a Windows directory. To add the entry to the BCD store, type Yes. A confirmation message appears that indicates the entry was added successfully.
• If the Bootrec.exe tool cannot locate any missing Windows installations, you must remove the BCD store, and then you must re-create it. To do this, type the following commands in the order in which they are presented. Press ENTER after each command.
Bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
Bootrec /rebuildbcd
Restart the computer.

Installed a new hard drive (old one missing) and tried to load windows vista and nothing happens

You might need to go into "setup" when your computer boots up and change the boot options so that it boots first from CDrom and hard drive second. This should allow it to boot off the Windows CD. That will start your Windows setup program.

Laptop hard drive

Hi,
If you have reinstalled windows, on this hardrive using a different computer, it would not load into windows on the nortino 6770, because the windows now has the settings compatible with the other computer not this machine.
To get around this problem, you would have to reinstall windows, by placing the haddrive in the 6770 only. To do this , you can either copy the contents of the windows cd , to a flash drive or pen drive ,and then connect the same to the USB port of the laptop.
The other way , is connect an external USB cd drive and install the same.

Best of luck
