Stops during boot

When installing SDLT 320 on a VMS (VAX DS20)system the boot process stops after the POST. Unplugging the drive allows the boot to continue normally.

    Some additional information would help:

    • Is the system trying to boot automatically when turned on, or are you typing in a BOOT command yourself?

    • What is your default boot device? (Type SHOW BOOTDEF* at the >>> prompt to find out.)

    • What are the last two or three lines of output that you see when the SDLT is connected and the boot process stops?

    • What are the SCSI ID numbers set to on the SDLT and any SCSI disks on the same SCSI bus as the SDLT?
Something else that might be helpful:

    1. Power off DS20 and SDLT.

    2. Connect the SDLT to the DS20.

    3. Power on the SDLT, then the DS20.

    4. At the >>> prompt enter "SHOW CONFIG" and press return.

    5. Repeat steps 1 to 4, except disconnect the SDLT which you can leave powered off.

    6. Compare the output of the two SHOW CONFIG and respond back with any lines that are different or missing between the two.

First of all the DS20 is an Alpha box not a VAX. The problem here is usually an adress conflict. These tape drives are usually device 500. Try placing the drive onto a different controller card. That should resolve the problem.

Using SDLT cleaning Tape

When the drives Clean LED comes on, install a "Universal" LTO Cleaning tape, as these drives do not need routine cleaning. Only ever clean a LTO drive when it's requested, as the cleaning media itself is more abrasive than a standard tape.

Will not boot

With limited information, this could be many things, however, I can try to explain what is happening. The computer runs several tests before it boots. This process is called POST (power on self test). During POST, all critical systems are analyzed, albeit a short test. When the system comes to something that does not pass the test, it usually puts up a warning allowing you to either continue or shut down and fix it. Sometimes, it comes to a test that creates a "loop" of instructions for the computer. When a loop happens, the computer does the same thing over and over and cannot stop. A loop can occur during POST if an instruction is not followed correctly. The most common cause for this in your type of computer is a problem with either the boot sector on the hard drive or the hard drive itself. Try disconnecting the hard drive and boot to a floppy or a cd. If the computer boots, you know where your trouble is. If on the other hand, with the hard drive disconnected and the same problem occurs, change your memory to fix the problem. Good luck tony

Installation stops

NTLDR is the NT Loader basically the instructions the bios needs to start your Operating system.
If it is not finding the NTLDR it could be due to a couple of things.

First thing I'd do is to check that the install disc is a full install disc for the OS and not an Upgrade disc.

If it IS a full OS disc then we need to enter the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) Usually done by hitting <Delete> or <F12> during boot up. Once in the BIOS there should be an option for "Boot order" we need to set it so that your optical drive (CD/DVD) is listed as the 1st entry in the boot order. press <F10> to save and exit. Put the CD/DVD in your drive and boot up your computer.

this should get you started with your installation.
If it does not, you likely have a faulty optical drive.
Please post your results so we can further assist you.
