Question about Garden
I have a John Deere STX38 lawn tractor, and yesterday when I was mowing my lawn my tractor just quit running. A few minutes lator it started up again and I started mowing again, then it did it again. Only this time I couldnt get it started. Can you tell me what is wrong?
Let me guess, as soon as it sets still for a few hours, it fires straight up again, like there was no problem? :D
If you have one with the Kohler 12.5 Command Pro Engine:
These have a known issue with the ignition pickup/coil assembly. If you feel confident in your skills, removing the upper engine shroud will reveal the coil pack. Loosen the bolts and adjust it's width from the flywheel using a business card as a feeler gauge to set the gap. The card should just *slightly* bind between pickup and flywheel. If it STILL stalls and stumbles and eventually quits AFTER it is hot as you describe, likely the coil pack is tired and worn. Heat will make them short out internally as internal windings expand from heat. Replacement is the only cure. About $40 from Kohler, about $60 from John Deere.

had a similar problem. The engine mount bolt that grounded the PTO black ground wire was loose- causing the pto to work erratically. To see this bolt (13mm i think) you will have to lie on your back and look under the machine. It is above the front steering arm of the right tire. If the wire is dangling you will need a new bolt. Thanks for the previous posts ;)
