Re: Memory capacity for an old compaq?

This is what I found in a PC magazine from June of 1998..
The 3 Compaq Deskpro memory sizes were,
16 MB, 32 MB and 64 MB..
I'll keep reading thru it for your model.
My how things have changed since 98 lol.

If you're not sure if a module is right for your system, use the Crucial Memory Advisor tool for a list of guaranteed compatible modules. first you will need to select the manufacturer from a drop down list then select your product line from a drop down list then select the model then click find it will take you directly to compatible ram also you will have an option to scan your system you should always ask for a guarantee on the compatibility before making any purchase and try to buy for working pairs if possible

I have compaq presario 2.6ghz with Max Capacity 1gb Ram- is there anyway i can increase capacity to 2gb or even higher?

Unfortunately, if the manufacturer states that the max RAM supported is 1GB, that's going to be all you're going to be able to install - unless you replace the motherboard. This can be a considerable expense.

One last thing you could do is go to Crucial - there, you can run a scan on your computer to find out what memory options you have. I would be very surprised to learn they differ from what Compaq is telling you (unless the motherboard was replaced by someone already).

Please rate this reply - good luck!

Have old compaq Deskpro EN ENS815EC733 M1BU

I would buy a cheap usb card to fit into a pci slot on the old computer.
Otherwise you would need a serial cable (if your laptop has a serial port) if not it would be a serial to usb plus the software to transfer, i would say far too much trouble.
A usb card is a couple £/$

Installed new memory and now wont boot up. Static problem? I remember compaq once told me how to fix it.

A few thing can be wrong.
  • Wrong speed memory - Make sure it is both xxxGHZ, same as your old memory (Take the old memory to the computer store)
  • Memory limit with each slot (Max memory divided by # slots)
  • Overall memory limit (visit the mfg spedific model's page)
  • Incompatable/Bad memory
  • Mix your old and new memory (1 old / 1 new) If the new is incompatable the old (in slot1) should work and an odd amount of ram displays

I do not know which model of compaq deskpro I have, But I have used a couple ram cards from another compaq... it increased the ram but the video(from youtube for example) freezes... what can I do to fix it...

If you added more ram to the computer that is a slower speed, the memory will run at a lower speed overall. Even if one stick is faster, they will run at the speed of the slower memory. I would check that. Sometimes it slows your computer down to increase the ram if you decrease the speed.
If its the same speed, you can usually increase your video dedicated memory in the BIOS settings.
Good Luck!
