I have a craftsman 917 270650 6 speed. The mower is not going into any gear and the belt seems to be good. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi,

I'm wondering if the brake somehow got messed up - as if the mower thinks the brake is still engaged when it's really not. Did you lose or forget to install shaft key that ties the rim or wheel hub to rear axle. Look at the trans axle drawing,on each axle near the end of shaft is a key,get number off drawing, look at parts list for that number, see if a sq key or a woodriff key(half moon)key may have come off with rim & fell out later,if key on either wheel missing or sheared tractor will not move.

DId you just have a tire off??
I had the same problem- took it in thinking it was the transmission and it was the " key " that goes into the shaft on the wheel hub. If you took the tire off and did not replace the Key when you put the tire back on it will mimic the symptoms of a failed clutch or transmission.
The key is a small piece of metal that the is long and retangular shaped. It has a specific groove cut out and you hammer it into place allowing the wheel to catch and move when the transmission engages.

If that is not the case then you really need to have the trans and clutch checked.

Self-propelling action on 917.378771 not working

This type of mower uses a gear box driven by a v-belt. First check the v-belt. Is it in place and does it turn when the drive is engaged. You can also check the drive pinions in the wheels. These can wear out or "chew up" the insides of the drive wheels. I doubt it is the transmission, these are tough little units on this mower.

What causes my 13.5 hp craftsman model #917270412 engine to die when i release the clutch

My question would be what caused the belt to break. Have you checked under the mower deck to make sure the blades turn freely? Could be that something is jamming them and causing the motor to die. Or even a blade that hit something hard might be bent against the top of mower deck.

High speed on lawnmower

High speed is good..BUT you can drive it more slowly by loosening pressure on the clutch handle. Pull it very gently, and drive more slowly. The belt that is around the blade shaft runs the wheels
Pulling the clutch moves a gear in a rudimentary
gear box. Easy does it!

Craftsman 42 inch15 hp kohler mower 6 speed manual transmission- Will not go into gear

This is a crash type gearbox, so if there is any drag on the belt to the gearbox pulley it will not go into gear, with the engine not running will it go into gear? if yes it is a belt dragging issue, check the keepers around the engine pulley and gearbox pulley.

Craftsman riding mower won't move.

yes it is a bad belt unless it is a hydro-stat(no clutch) you need to look under the mower and see if the belt is on correctly

MTD Lawn Tractor problem

The front belt should be a 954-0280A, rear 954-0370. When you go to higher gears, the front belt should be getting tighter as the vari-speed pulley is moving further back. Remove the shift plate, put the transmission in neutral. Start the engine, put speed selector in highest gear and slowly let out on the clutch. You should be able to see what the problem is. It will do everything the same as if were in gear, except move. Make sure you have the correct belts.
