What is the grill cap on the PUR filter? I don't seem to have it.
I have the kenmore side by side refridgerator that takes the PUR water filter. the item is #04609030000 and Mfr. model # 09030.
I recently got a new filter and in reading the instructions, realize I do not see the "grill cap" it talks about on the old filter. This makes me think it came with the refridgerator and I threw it away with a filter early on. Also, may be the reason why I have trouble getting the old filter to eject when it needs to be replace.
My questions are :
1. What is the grill cap?
2. Can I order its replacement?
3. can the filter work without it?
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Removing and replacing a water filter - base grill
Filters situated in the base grill (below the freezer compartment) of
Whirlpool-built side-by-side refrigerators are relatively simple to replace.
Follow these two steps:
Grasp the filter's end and make a one-quarter turn to the left.
Pull the filter straight out.
To replace with a new filter, repeat these two steps in the opposite order,
making sure to first remove the red cap from the filter. Proceed by pushing the
filter straight into the slot, and then giving it a one quarter turn to the
right. Note: Replacing this type of filter is quick - there is no need to
unplug your refrigerator when replacing it. Also, this filter should be replaced
every six months.
Take the new water filter out of the box and remove the two red shipping caps on the end of the filter. The water filter is located on the front panel down near the floor. Push the release button located just to the left of the water filter grille cap, this will release the filter. Remove the grille cap from the filter by twisting it counterclockwise. Reinstall the grille cap on the new water filter. Insert the new water filter in the refrigerator making sure the words on the filter are the correct side up. Push the water filter in until it clicks in place. Flush Water After Installing New Filter Be sure you flush out the water from the new filter after you replace it! Many readers are having trouble with airlocks because they are skipping this important step. Kenmore recommends you run the water out of the water and ice maker for a few minutes to flush out the new filter. This also helps remove air bubbles from the system. If you don’t do this it’s possible that the water dispenser may not work properly due to an air lock.
This particular water filter claims to reduce: Cysts and turbidity – linked to gastrointestinal problems Lead Chlorine – taste and odor for better tasting water Sediment – for clearer water o-Dichlorobenzene – linked to risk of liver, kidney, or circulatory system problems Benzene – linked to increase risk of cancer and anemia. Note continue changing the filter on a regular basis. Hope this helpout....
Look at the bottom, if not obvious, perhaps behind a grill. Ours just has a cap, turns & slides out. (Kenmore/Whirlpool) Compare filter prices: Whirlpool filters - the same PUR filter as the Kenmore - was half the price from a parts store rather than from Sears. Either a parts store or appliance dealer can also tell you what kind of filter you need & how to access it.
The base grille water filter is located below the freezer compartment door. Depending on your model, you may have a filter that is installed behind the base grille or a filter that is installed through the base grille.

1. Press the eject
button to release the filter from the base grille. 2. Pull the filter
straight out. 3. Turn the cap
counterclockwise to remove it from the filter. IMPORTANT: Do
not discard the cap. It is part of your refrigerator. Keep the cap to use with the replacement
filter. 4. Align the ridge
on the cap with the arrow on the new filter and turn the cap until it snaps into place. NOTE: You can run the
dispenser without a filter. Your water will not be filtered. Simply insert the cap all of the way
into the base grille and rotate the cap until it is firmly in
place. 5. Remove the
protective covers from the O-rings. Be sure the O-rings are still in place after the covers are removed. 6. Push the filter
into the base grille. The eject button will pop back out when the filter is fully engaged. 7. Flush the water
system. See “Water and Ice Dispensers.” gaskets. Do not use paper towels, scouring pads, or other
harsh cleaning tools.
