LOL. To understand how wireless works, you need to do some extra reading. It depends on what your circumstances are, but I live in a cul-de-sac (French for dead end street) and I use just enough to keep the neighbors out of my system. Sure, the kid next door might get enough smarts to crack into my network someday, but I'll take my chances.

http://www.practicallynetworked.com/support/wireless_secure.htm

The simplest is to not publish the SSID. Then comes WEP, then comes WPA, which the D-Link and other wireless devices may not support, then MAC address filtering.

Each is fairly easy to set up, but the key is to do something and change passwords away from admin and password.

I have several neighbors using my 2wire100 Gateway modem from their homes. This is slowing my internet experience and sometimes locks me up on the internet. How can I put a security password on this...

You have to log on at the router's settings page and go under wi-fi (or wireless) section. Here locate the security tab, enable it and set a password for this connection. I suggest you when doing all the above settings to be connected with cable connection. This is to prevent you to be locked out of your wi-fi in case of an error at password.

Hello sir/madam i have problem with D-link router i never change password but now i can not log in the old password why?

Hi do you mean log in to change routers settings or connect to the network which is broadcast by router. If you mean first log in to router settings etc. If your old password don't work you should find a reset button somewhere on router if you press it it will take router to default settings and you can use default user name and password to log in. If you mean connecting to the network you should go to the settings of your router connect to the router by network cable and put 198.162.1.1 in your internet browser put your username and password (which you can find in manual or on internet (just google "D-Link DI-624M Router default username password) and check what password is and change if you like. You should find it in wireless----> security settings. Good luck and please don't forget to let me know if that was any helpful.

I want to put password on my router netgear

do you have the manual, get the manual from netgear online and that will give you the default passwords and login.

    select your router here: http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/family/a_id/1296

To access the router you use an internet browser and type the ip into the address bar, something like 192.168.1.1 then you logon with username and password. usually admin and admin for most routers. then in the settings you should find an option to set password

I've locked the wifi connection so only my laptop can access it how do i open it to make it free for everyone around the wifi router?

Just "undo" what you did to "lock" it.
Then, run the "Wireless Networking Setup Wizard",
and pick an SSID and a password,
and tell the password *ONLY* to your friends/family,
since you don't want somebody sitting in their car, outside your home,
to "steal" your Internet access (for "hacking" purposes).

    Firmware Upgrade

    1. Please verify the model and version of the router underneath it.
    2. Go to http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/family/a_id/1293.
    3. Please click on the appropriate version of the router.
    4. Select the link of the latest firmware. Please click on the button Right-click and Save to Download.
    5. Save the file to the Desktop.

Note: Please perform firmware upgrade with wired or Ethernet connection only. Before you upgrade, write down all current settings as you need to enter them manually after upgrading.

    6. Using the computer hardwired on the router, open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
    7. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
    8. A window will prompt for a user name and password. The default username is "admin" and the default password is "password".

Note: If it does not take password as the password, you might have changed it when you have run the NETGEAR Setup CD so please try other passwords. If you cannot remember the password, you need to reset the router and run the Setup CD to reconfigure it.

    9. Click on Maintenance and then Router Upgrade.
    10. Click Browse and locate the upgrade file in your Desktop. Click Upload.
    11. Please wait for the router to reboot.

    b. Connect the computer to one of the four LAN ports (i.e port 1, 2, 3 or 4) on the back of the router. The corresponding port light where you connected the computer should be lit up.

    2. Access the router's web-based utility.

    a. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
    b. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.0.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
    c. A window will prompt for a user name and password. By default, the user name is "admin" and the password is "password" or ( for older RP614 ) "1234".

    Configure the router.

If your Internet Service Provider is using a DSL connection that does not require a login, please follow the steps below:

    a. Click on Basic Settings under Setup tab.
    b. Select No for Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?.
