Question about Avanti EC15W-2 Compact Refrigerator

1 Answer

Avanti EC15W-2 Thermoelectric - stopped cooling. Purchased on August 3, 2006.  Has always been quiet. Still is, but I can hear that something's running if I put my ear to it. Light works.  Any suggestions? How do I access the fuse or the circuit breaker?Thanks.

    I know a teeny bit about electronics, but the fuse is not blown on mine nor are the capacitors leaking. It's really weird how this technology could work at all - a couple of fans blowing on some heat sinks. Why all the circuit boards?

    The light works, the fans work, it blows warm air into the refrigerator.

    Have the same problem with the ECW 28 model bought just a year ago.... Started leaking water from the fan area INTO the fridge rather than the catch compartment in the rear...

    Now only barely cooler than external temp...

    help please

    Cleaned both the fans and the external heat sink (metal radiator area) as was very dusty.

    All fans work ie both the outer fans to cool the heat sink AND the internal fan which blows fridge air over the "cool" area of the thermo-electric plate.

    BUT still only Minimal cooling after overnight 18C degrees on Max vs 14C before.... dunno if the right juice is getting to the thermo-electric plate???

    BTW one heat sink on the circuit board is extremely hot ... any clues electronic guys??

I think the circuit board is nothing more than a power supply converting the 120 volts ac to dc. If that goes then there is no way for the solid state device to cool,
Is there dust under the back cover? Is there frost/ice build up in the fridge fan compartment. I suggest to unplug for a day and try again. Hope this helps.

Not cooling at all.

If it is worth it you should have a refrigiration tech look at it.

It could be out of Freon, or the compressor may not be operating.

Refrigerator is not cooling properly. Warm all the time.

The issue could be the cold control, timer, wiring, or the compressor.

The temp control has to be closed for voltage to get to the timer. The timer then calls for the fans and compressor to run. The timer could have stalled after a defrost cycle or the cold control could not be sending voltage to the timer.

My avanti thermoelectric compact refrigerator periodically runs very loud which is not normal. If I hit it, it stops and runs quietly again. Any ideas? I have already cleaned the dust off thoroughly and...

The noise if from a sympathetic vibration of the unit which transforms to vibrate any loose joints, parts or fittings.
You will need to listen to the noise, use your hand to hold up the plastics or the joints in the bottom section of the unit or the frame work. It will require a lot of patience to find the source of noise. Pad it up after tapping for loose noise on the rear and insulate the noise heard till you finally get rid of any vibration noise..

Refrigerator (s/n: AV051008384) refrigeration unit (Peltier) not functioning. The fan is functional. Removed PCBA, no visual evidence of electrolytic capacitor rupture or thermal overstress to components...

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Peltier devices although not that efficient are known to be reliable. On your described problem, possibilities are:
  • thermoelectric (Peltier) module(s) (most likely) - the active cooling elements.  Most design have several sub-modules connected in series to form an array.  Failure of one in between will fail the entire module;
  • controller board  (likely) - or more specifically the section that regulates/control supplied power to the Peltier modules;
  • sensor (least likely) - most designs would have a sensor for the hotside forced ventilation system.   If the external ventialtion (fan) fails, then the controller board would prevent supply of voltage to the modules;
  • connectors (a possibility) - other than the Peltier effect, it is possible to have electrolysis on the terminals/connectors which would cause corrosion.  Check and clean all connectors to expose fresh metal, ensure tightness and positive contact.
An easy check is to test for the presence / absence of voltage to the module(s).  If voltage could be found, then it would be the Peltier module(s) that have failed. Absence of supply voltage would indicate the controller board to be possibly faulty.  To confirm, determine if there is power supplied to the controller board but none is in turn supplied to the Peltier modules. Absence of power going into the controller board would indicate a power supply problem.

Please exercise due caution when working with a live unit.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Not getting very cold

thermoelectric needs a good heat dissipation. Give the unit a good ventilation to dissipate the heat, you will cool the unit. The cooler the ambient, the cooler the box. Remember not to reverse the switch, you will get a heated box instead.
