I have a central most site for you to check for the RPC-1 firmware for your Superdrive (below) however, I also have provided a great forum on the RPC-1 firmware made of Mac users who may provide some valuable information for you. I would recommend you view their forum first, then go to the RPC-1 Firmware portal site.

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

HL-DT-ST DVDRW GA11N problem

With your Superdrive being dead out of the box, there is no need to be burdened with it.

Whenever you purchase an Apple Desktop or portable notebook, it automatically comes with 90 days phone support and 1 year of hardware support. So you can simply contact Applecare Support at 800-275-2273 (make sure you have your iMac serial# ready) to get that drive replaced under warranty of course.

But it may be even easier to take the iMac back in from where you purchased it and get that drive replaced or get a new iMac 21" from the store you purchased it from, unless it was via an online seller like direct, or any other Apple-authorized reseller online.

Considering your model is so new, I would recommend that course of action. Now if you are getting some functionality from that drive, then let me know and I will provide some troubleshooting procedures for you.

I have a HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4040N drive in stalled in an emachine Laptop, the drive will read data, cds music and dvd movies, but can not burn either cds or dvd...Depending on which program i use for...

well there could be a few things you can try
1) update the firmware and see if it works any better
2) try brand name DVD-R disks and CD-R disks
3) try an updated hack firmware such as these
4) try Nero Lite. it is free and it supports almost any drive.

I would not worry about the driver as they normmally would not need any.
