I still get a memory card error message no matter what card I insert. It is no locked, taking out the batteries did not help and my setup menu does not give a format option--Canon Power Shot S2 IS. Sometimes the error message is card locked. When the camera is first turned on, the message is memory card error.

I tried all of the suggestions.  Contact cleaner, compressed air, checking the card, etc. all to no avail.  The format option does not seem to exist on my menu.  How do I send this thing to Canon for repair?

None of the suggestions worked.  Where to I send it to be repaired?

I get memory card error message with any and all cards. Have tried contact cleaner, compressed air and removing batteries, checking card for locking mechanism use. I cannot locate a menu item for formatting. Should I send this for repair?

Hi,

There might be some tricks that might work :-

1. Taking the battery out for a few minutes would do the trick.

2. Certainly sounds frustrating. Never-the-less, let's start with the most common and simple fix first. Let's look one more time for that lock tab. Hold your card where you can see the copper connections. Look or even feel along the right hand EDGE. You may feel a small gap or notch. At one end of that notch is the tab. Just slide it to the other end of the notch and you'll be set to go.
If no notch or tab is located, you could be experiencing something that was reported on Canon S400 cameras and is correctable.

I found this elsewhere on this website:

As suggested in an earlier post:
- Removed the CF card
- Held down 'Menu' key until I could reset to factory default settings
- Popped in card
- Formatted it
- Restarted camera.
Well, it didn't work for me & not wanting to unscrew all the tiny screws and open up my camera
I just reformatted the card a 2nd time. This time it worked! What a relief!
Maybe that will help. Also, others have posted that they have had Canon fix this problem for free.

To adapt to your model camera -- first job is remove the SD card. next is resetting the camera. each model is different so you may have to read the manual for the procedure for this model. Some cameras require removal of the battery for several minutes then replacing it and turning the camera on. It is similar to rebooting a computer to reset everything to the factory defaults. Next reinsert the card and format it in the camera. Be aware that formatting the card will erase everything on it. If that is not acceptable, then buy a card reader and transfer everything on the card to your computer via the card reader before reformatting it in the camera.

I hope this would help.

Any further help, let me know.

Memory card locked

SD and SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

format the card once with the card reader in the computer. then try if the error message comes. Also try resetting your camera to defaults.

I have a 4GB SD HC card that works well in my Powerhot SD750 but gives an error code "Memory Card Error" and "Card Locked!" on my PowerShot S2 IS. Is there a fix for this? Peter

The S2 IS uses SD cards. While SDHC cards will fit into the slot, they are electronically incompatible and will not work. While you can use SDHC cards with the SD750, you will have to use SD cards, 2GB and smaller, with the S2 IS.

Memory card error message

Cards are coming in different formats and it might be possible that you brought a card which is not suitable or functional with your camera. The other reason could be that we are having options to lock our memory card in digital camera and you might have taken out your earlier card without unlocking it. The system might be broken from inside and this could be a reason that you are still getting a message that memory card is locked. It seems possible based on problem you are sharing.
