Either compressor is going bad or the fan is rubbing. There is a condensor fan that comes on only when the compressor starts. So check the fan out first to make sure that it is not rubbing or moving around. If that is not then check the compressor by letting it run for about 5 minutes then touch the top of the compressor. BE careful as it can be extremly hot that will show you one of two things either bad compressor or condensor is dirty and a garden hose with a jet blast of water will solve the problem. If that doesnt work either compressor is bad and will either need to be replaced for about 250 dollars or unit will need to be replaced

Auto/On set to ON. Fan runs.

Sounds like the thermostat, the way to verify is to unplug indoor unit, remove thermostat, take pic of wiring with phone or label the wires as to the terminals. Carefully twist the yellow,(Y) Red (R) and the green (G) together. Plug the furnace back in, if the unit operates normally, replace the thermostat. I am basing this on the fact that the blower speed is changing. This could also be an anomaly within the circuit board in the furnace section, not likely though as the outside unit (condenser) is not controlled n by the indoor board unless this is a heat pump. hope this helps. I have the air conditioner in full blast and it sounds like it's only in fan mode and it doesn't have the heavy sound and my room doesn't get as cold as it used to

Hi!!

It seems the compressor is not kicking in, this could be due to:

Thermostat settings,
Faulty thermostat
Low on R-22 freon gas
Faulty compressor or Relay.
Faulty wiring

Rooftop RV Air Conditioner: temp outside 90 or above. compressor kicks off ....

It sounds like maybe an overload for the compressor is tripping and resetting once the compressor cools. Possibly due to a low charge.

I noticed some straining noise coming from my a/c unit today. The fan on top of the condenser runs fine but as soon as the compressor tries to kick on the fan stops for a split second and you get a kind of...

You amy ahave a bvad capacitor on the outside unit. It starts the fan and the compressor. You can change this yourself. Open the outside panel and you will see a silver canister with terminals out the top. Replace this and I think your problem will go away. On the cap. it will say something like 30uf 5uf 370 ot 440 Just get these numbers and get a new one. Russ

Sometimes compressor does not kick on

It sounds like the coolant charge is marginal. There are sensors that can monitor the pressure levels and can disable the compressor to prevent damage to it. You need a tech to check the system before you lose it completely. Figure on $100-120 cost for check and recharge if needed.

Ac starts kicks on and off every couple mins

Sounds like the compressor is the one making the "NOISE". If the sound sounds like something trying to start, then kicking off, its probably the compressor and not the fan. Hence no cool air.

Carrier air conditioner cycles on and off

The compressor/condenser is being called all the time. The reason it goes off is because the evaporator (indoors) freezes up when the fan is told to turn off by the thermostat. This further cooling lowers the low side pressure below the low limit switch point turning off the compressor unit.
Solution: Make sure the thermostat is wired correctly. Green wire is usually the compressor wire but maybe not.
