how do i change a starter kit on my lawn mowe

  • frankfaustin May 30, 2009

    briggs & stratton

  • frankfaustin May 30, 2009

    its a 6 horsepower engine

  • Dwain Pippen May 11, 2010

OK, it's a briggs engine. What is the model and type # stamped on the starter housing? It will probably be right above the sparkplug or on a horizonal tab on the side of it.

What is the model and type # on the ENGINE?

  • Dwain Pippen May 11, 2010

I don't know how else to ask you. I need the Model and Type #'s that are stamped on the engine. You will see where it says MODEL....TYPE....CODE. The model will be something like 124K02, type.0668-01 and then a longer number for a code that I don't need.

Electric Mower zapped?

They should replace it. They broke it. If it was just a cut in the cable it should work again, but they have probably burnt it out. Change the fuse first also as that would have popped.

Broken spring in recoil starter on lawn mower

While I have not done this on newer model lawn mowers, I have replaced recoil springs in the past. Here's what I did: First you need to pull the spark plug wire off so the engine will not start. Then block the flywheel with a piece of wood to keep it from turning. Then, using another piece of wood such as a short (6-8 inch) hardwood dowel placed against the ears of the recoil drive, and drive it in a reverse direction (clockwise) with a hammer to knock it loose. It may take several sharp blows to break it loose. The recoil drive is reverse threaded to keep it from coming loose when the engine is running. Once the drive is loose, remove it to get access to the recoil spring which must be replaced if it is broken. With a new spring in place, rethread the recoil drive counter clockwise until it is finger tight. Then, tighten it down with one sharp blow against the wooden dowel.

You need to obtain the model number off the engine and go to a website that has small engine parts, and likely schematics. Enter the model number and find your engine and when you get a list of illustrated parts drawing select the one for the starter or recoil strarter or some such listing. This will give you an exploded view illustrated parts drawing and you need to find the broken parts. Take the number that identifies it on the drawing and look to the associated table. This will give you a part number and allow you to order it.

I hope this helps.

Pulled the cord out of the mower trying to get it back.

you have to remove the top of the mower and you may need to buy a new spring depending if it broke or not, then wind the spring up and slide the rope back through the holes and tie a knont in the rope and let the spring wind the rope back in. reassemble the top on to the engine.

Make sure you hold the throttle bar firmly against the handle. If that doesn't work the cable from the throttle to the engine may need adjusting. The only other cause would be a damaged crank shaft.
