It might help to know the brand/model of the microwave, but in general, they are alike in some ways. Most have one, two, or three different switches that are part of the door interlock. This is to prevent the microwave from running with the door open (good idea). I recently repaired my 15 year old Panasonic microwave that had a similiar problem. You punched in the time, hit start, it "turned on", rotated, and sounded like it was cooking, but nothing got hot. Here is what I found.
I unplugged the oven and removed the back cover, it is usually all one piece with 6 or so screws. Inside the oven, where the door latch enters the frame, it is probably pushing on a piece that is activate one or more interlock switches. Chances are, that the switch that prevents the "power" components from turning on has failed. Over time these "microswitches" will go bad. I could "jiggle" my handle or push in on it "just right" and get it to work at times, but it needed replacing.
Now comes the part where you need a little electrical knowledge and a multimeter. You will need to check each switch to see if it has continuity when closed and that it opens up, electrically, when open. If you don't know how to do resistance checks or have a meter, ask around, you might be suprised by friends or coworkers that know how to do this. If not, you may be at the point where you will need to take it to a repair shop. If you can check the switches and find one that is bad, they only cost a few bucks, and you will be back in business. Reassembly is pretty easy.
This is the part that gets most folks, because they don't have a meter or know how to use one, a repair shop will probably want $50 - $100 bucks (minimun) and you can buy a new one for twice that. This is one reason our landfills are full of small appliance that still have a lot of life left in them. You can buy a cheap meter at Wally world or radio shack. If you want to give it a shot, follow up to this post, and I will try to walk you through this. Hope this helps.

How can I get my microwave to actually heat when everything else (cook time, power level, clock, etc., are set and seem to be running?

Sounds like the MW Emitter is not working or the wave guide is disconnected. If it is the wave guide then you can fix it yourself if you take the rear cover off. It is the pipe, which in cross section is quite rectangle shaped with rounded corners. It should be connected to the emitter at one end and the opaque guide cover at the other with no breaks. If the emitter is faulty then seek professional help.

The microwave isn't heating/cooking on any setting but the turntable, light is working. What should I check before calling a repairman?

There is nothing more you can do, you have verified everything is working except it is not heating the food. The next step is have the repairman come in to isolate the cause.

The most likely cause is a bad magnetron, "heats food" the other two possibilities are the high voltage capacitor and diode. The cost to repair will a approach a new microwave oven.

Own Whirlpool microwave model MH7100XY, everything works on it, however it does not heat anything, heard a small pop and after that it does not warm or cook anything?????

The pop sound is an indicator the magnetron is gone that heats the food. It is cheaper to replace the microwave oven than have it repaired.

Microwave works perfectly but does not heat

Sadly your microwave has done it's last cooking. The mechanism you need to make it cook again would cost you more than a replacement microwave.

Everything works except the cooking part/no heating/turntable not turning, help!

you may have gotten a power surge and that can cause some funny things to happen, 1st is there power to the oven, 2nd if so there may be an internal fuse protector built in to the oven, check with the manual for anything of that sort listed. if not you may have to take it in and have it repaired by a pro. there is a lot of voltage in these ovens and unless you know what you are doing a person could get hurt

Microwave won't heat food.

My Whirlpool microwave, over the stove, stopped working when my son used it to heat his food and a heavy sound came out, like something exploded in it. When I check it, there was nothing broke. Everything works fine except that it does not heat. I will appreciate any help
