The lens isn't connecting to the mobo correctly, put some pressure on the lens (sounds bad but it works for me haha) it will work correctly until you shut it down for a while. Do not take it apart and attempt to fix it, it doesn't help ( I thought maybe the screws that held down the lens were loose or that the connectors needed to be cleaned but nope) a replacement lens should solve it, but why buy one of those when you can just put pressure on the lens before every use?

Screen has lines

Most likely youve damage the lcd screen either by dropping it even though you didnt, but that would be the only cause this problem, line on a lcd screen are usually cause by a broken power current thru screen or a cracked lcd screen maybe it was defective in the first time. I dont know, but line are usually means no power or no information going thru screen.

need to be replaced.

Display turns purple?

LilLette,
Sorry to say that this sounds like failure of the camera's CCD imager. This is not something that you can repair yourself. If still under warranty, Canon will repair this for you free of charge. Even if no longer under warranty, still recommend contacting Canon, as this should not happen in a newer model camera (be nice, and maybe they'll be nice about it too :-).

If in US or Canada, Call 1-800-OK-CANON. Anywhere else, contact Canon support through www.Canon.com

Purple lcd display

Hello tonyj111, If your old pictures look fine on the display, then the problem is related to the ccd sensor itself. The purple color is displayed because of a problem in the signal transmision from the ccd sensor to the camera's main processor. This is done using 3 channels one for each primary color (RGB red green blue). If the connector to the sensor is broken, or got out of place (loose) because some mechanic shock or symilar, the data processing woun't come out right. It is purple because your camera's processor mess up blue and red signals therefore resulting same purple instead of blue or red colours. In order to fix this you will need to either send the camera to a service center to have those connections checked (if your camera is still in warranty you will want to do this) or ask me for further instructions if you wish to try to dissasemble the camera yourself. In either way the problem is fixable and in most probabilities a cheap fix will work. Good luck

Vertical lines and purple artifacts when the camera is aimed at bright subjects

Current LCD display technology can reproduce about 300 different levels of brightness. Brightly lit scenes or light sources may exceed this brightness range, causing a temporary disruption (artifacts) in the live display. Artifacts are part of the display, but they are not part of your recorded image. If you take a picture while you see artifacts on the screen and then display the picture on the LCD, you will no longer see the artifacts.
