Changing colour depth

My OS is XP. I have a viewsonic VA1912wb monitor and a ATI Radeon 9550 graphic card. I just tried to play game, but was told I need to set 256 color... I can only use 16 and 32 (medium and highest). How can I get it to let me change to 256 color...?

Clicking the directions it tells me, it takes me to this page, where it says....

"The following products have been moved to the legacy software support structure (including Mobile and All-in-Wonder Variants):

ATI Radeon 9550 Series" (plus other series)

How do I get to the support structure?

Downloading now;. Will let you know how it goes. thanks

I am trying option one. I did the second drivers only... and after reboot, windows told me that It was using the default/ generic or something, as the driver as I just tried, was for a older system.

The version I have, is 8.541.0.0. The new version (I think, for me anyways), would be the 9.3. Gonna try the package and see what happens. Trial and error. But, thinking about it, the package would contain the same driver I just dowqnloaded wouldn['t it? *crosses fingers* Its the xp media centre version that I need to find.

  • w0lfm4n May 30, 2009

I was right, isn't the right driver for my card 9in the package either. *goes on a hunt*

Yeah, that is true.... I just fried my other motherboard, so I bought a cheap as pc, and moved somethings from other pc onto this one (graphic card, cpu, cd n dvd drive, hdd etc.). I got the new mobo, 159 bux, next item is the cpu at 135.. So slowly but surely it will be all updated.

I think you are using the minimal Microsoft video drivers for your video card. Install true ATI/AMD video drivers for that card and you should get a world of better video out of that card. Go to; http://ati.amd.com to get the latest drivers.

They are at the bottom of that page. I think option 2. display driver only should work.

I think you are caught up in the delema that we all get into at one time or another. Time has passed us by. Our good equipment has grown old and is loosing support. It may be time to bite the bullet and upgrade to a new video card or motherboard and other related goodies. Best of luck!

I cant play need for speed mostwanted at high settings on my ati radeon 9550.how can i play it on high settings?plz solve

You can't, 9550 is a very old card that, when it was new, was a low power one, for multimedia use, not gaming. You will need to lower the resolution drastically if you want to play that game in high settings.

Black Screen when playing 3D games on ATI Radeon 9550 X1050 Serie

the game resolution is not supported by your monitor....this is the reason your screen goes blank....
by the next time if the screen goes blank, press alt+ctrl+del together and check are you able to see the task manager....
if you can see the task manager, then close the game from that window by selecting end task....
if you cant see the task manager, then press ctrl+alt+del together 2 times and check....
if nothing works, then try by checking with any HD monitors if available with you or with your friends...

Changing my colour on desktop

You'll have to run the game in compatibility mode, with the color depth set to 256 colors.

You do this by right clicking on the executable of your game. click on Properties. Compatibility tab. Click the check to run compatibilty w/ Window 98, and set the color depth to 256 Color. That should work! Happy gaming.

Unable to change color depth...

Ok I think i found your problem. You don't need to install any drivers.

Switch your display to 256 colors To switch your display to 256 colors
Some games and other software programs require that your monitor be set to 256 colors, or they run better in 256 colors. Many of those programs will switch your monitor to 256 colors automatically when you start the program. For those that don't, follow the steps below if you want to switch the display temporarily while the game or program is running.
  1. On your desktop or on the Start menu, right-click the game or other program that you want to run in 256 colors, and then click Properties.
  2. Click the Compatibility tab.
  3. Select the Run in 256 colors check box.
  • The screen will revert to your default color quality when you close the program.
  • Try switching to 256 colors if your software program shows the wrong color or the graphics redraw slowly.
  • If your software program appears in a small window in the center of your screen, you can increase its size by changing your screen resolution temporarily. Follow the procedure above, but in step 3 select the Run in 640x480 screen resolution check box. Your screen resolution will revert to its previous resolution when you close the program.
  • The Compatibility tab is available only for programs or games located on your computer's hard disk. It is not available if the program is stored on a floppy disk, compact disk, or a network.
Please rate this if it fix your issue

CONNECT 3D RADEON 9550 256MB display problem

That graphics card i'm afraid is not good for todays games, same thing goes for your pentium 4. A driver update may fix your problem but that card and cpu need changing, probably a new motherboard would be needed also to fit a pci express graphics card along with a core 2 duo processor.

ATI Radeon 9550 (RV350) 3D Accelerator

Radeon 9550 series.: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/radeonx-xp
Download the Catalyst Software Suite Driver & CCC. You will find a ton of control within the Catalyst Control Center.
Remove any ATI software before installing the newer combo.
If you get a error during uninstall through the control panel run ATI's uninstaller at.:
