Question about Kenmore Refrigerators
Hello, We have a 1999 Kenmore Side by Side Ice and Water Refrigerator. The model inside says 25359482993 Model type is SI 24. We've noticed over the past week that the right side is not staying cold. The milk is barely cold. We've tried turning it up all the way to it's coldest setting the other day. The freezer is keeping most things frozen, except the ice coming out of the ice maker is quickly softening and melting together in the bin. I was reading other peoples problems and responses and came across the part with the vents being blocked by something or ice I believe. Well I took most of the stuff out and there is a slight ice build up on most of the back wall now, which I don't remember there being before (Although who checks for ice build up all the time, so I could be wrong. :) ) Toward the bottom with all the bottom vents in the back of the freezer they are all blocked solid with ice. Could this be our problem somewhere down the line? Or would there have to be more blockages all the way up the back wall? Do we just try to chop down the ice or what is recommended there. Do we need to shut the whole thing down and get those vents at the bottom to defrost? Thank you for any advice you can provide! I have a 1999 Kenmore side-by-side (Model 596.58695890) that is not cooling well in the freezer. Some items in freezer have thawed out, ice-cream is soft, but ice still frozen in ice bin. It seems to be on the verge of major problem. I've just cleaned the condenser coils beneath the fridge (they were quite dusty) and have confirmed that my evaporator is not iced over. I advanced the defrost timer from cool, to defrost, and back to cool....and it seemed to work properly. I also discovered that many bags of frozen veggies were blocking the fan exit at the back of the middle shelf of the freezer. If it does not begin to cool better, what is my next best step for trouble shooting? I am fairly handy with a multi-meter. Thanks, Dave

you have a defrost problem there are three compontes to the defrost systems the defrost thermostat the defrost timer and the defrost heater now when you open the freezer door you should hear a fan running now bear with me on the lower left hand side of your freezer compartment around where the wheel is at the bottom of the cabinet you should see a round hole where a strange plastic screw head is turn that slowly to the right till the freezer fan stops now the timer is in defrost in your freezer compartment remove the lower panel and you will see the evaporator looks like an aluminum honey comb now you will see a heating element like in a stove that's your defrost heater and clipped on one of the tubes you will see a small dome shaped disc one wire coming from fridge one wire going to the heater element ok if you turned the defrost timer till the fan stopped and by this time the element isn't on then take the defrost thermostat out of the loop by un plugging the fridge for safety then unplug the defrost thermostat from the heater and the other side from the fridge .Plug the heater to the fridge where you unplugged the thermostat and if the heater comes on after plugging the fridge back up you have a bad defrost thermostat but for real folks the timer and thermostat usually fail close so close together i recommend just replacing them both at the same time . now while your chasing down the parts if you need to save your food can take a hair drier and after removing the back panel in the freezer melt all the ice there will work good for about 4 days before freezing again
