How Do I Hard Wire a European Chandelier to a US Specs Outlet?

I have a Swarovski chandelier that I bought in Germany. I need to hook it up in USA. It has four wires; black, brown, green and blue. I am connecting it to a standard hanging lamp box with two AC wires and a unshielded copper ground wire. Please tell me how to connect this thing!

    The response I received was not geared towards European spec wiring. Please read the post again and tell me how/where to connect all four wires.

    The voltage doesn't matter as long as I put 110v light bulbs in the fixture. I guess I'll have to get a multimeter and figure this out on my own.

Unfortunately, No, you cannot rewire this to work. The issue is US power voltage is normally 110v AC from the wall outlet. And european wall outlets are 220v AC current. Unless you have a 220vAC ran to the cieling so you can hook this up, you are out of luck.. If however you DO have 220vAC junction box available where you wish to hang this chandelier, then simple wireing would work..

    If you are planning to completely re-wire the chandelier, you will need to remove all of the old wires, and lighting fixtures, and replace them with new ones, once all of the new fixtures are in place, be sure to run the wires as such..
    black -> black
    White -> white
    Green -> ground

    green / bare copper is usually your ground.

    so from the junction box you should see three wires, black, white and green / copper
    from your chandelier, once completely rewired, you will see one or more sets of three, black, green, and white. If your chandelier has multiple fixtures in it, the safest solution is to take all sets of black, and wire them to a single black lead. same with white, same with ground, there may or may not be a ground lead.

    once all sets are combined, make sure they are capped tightly, and well insulated before wiring them to your junction box.. For safety reasons, make sure to test all wiring to make sure power is fully OFF before attempting to work on them.

Hi there,

When working with electricity always:

  • Turn off the power.
  • Test the wires to ensure the power is off.
  • Lock out the panel box, so no one can accidentally turn the power back on while you are working.
  • Check with local authorities to see if a permit is required.
  • Have your work checked by an inspector.
  • Wear eye goggles and a dust mask.
  • To avoid overloading the circuit, consult a licensed electrician.
Basic Electrical Overview
The following are the basic principles of wiring in your home which can benefit every homeowner: In contemporary wiring, individual wires run in a sheathed cable. "Two-wire with ground" and "three-wire with ground" cables are available:

  • Two-wire with ground cables have a black wire, a white wire and an uninsulated ground.

  • Three-wire with ground cables (used when installing three-way and four-way switches) have a black wire, a white wire, a red wire and an uninsulated ground.

Install chandler

The silver metal you refer to is a junction box. If you are installing a standard chandelier, a strap is mounted on the two round ears one of which is shown in your video. There is a hole in the middle of the strap and your chandelier attaches to that hole. With the chandelier suspended from the strap, you now have room to make the wire connections. When finished, the wire connections are pushed up into the junction box and the canopy is tighened to finish the job

I have a vintage European chandelier with a 380v sticker so how do I make this work in my American house?

Take it to a lamp repair shop and have them look at it and rewire if necessary. It may need standard sockets for what we know as screw in light bulbs installed.

I have always used a lutron maestro dimmer. I replaced the chandelier and put in 6-60 watt bulbs. My previous chandelier used 18-25 watt chandelier bulbs and the dimmer worked fine. after changing the...

You should have just two wires plus a ground hooked up to the dimmer. It should install just like the maestro. If you are getting no lights with a double tap, or tap and hold, and if the led is not on, it is one of several things. Most are basic, but will list anyway. Check that your connections are good. Make sure you have power there. Make sure the bulbs are good. If all is fine, you probably have a defective dimmer if it worked prior to this. To test, take the dimmer out, restore power, and carefully touch one insulated wire to the other one. If the light comes on, it is the dimmer at fault.

Can you determine some way of telling which wire goes to the center conductor on each of the lamp sockets. (That particular wire,-- however it is identified-- (Maybe a tracer thread? in the woven insulation, or a colored thread indicator?) Or just figure out which wire is going to the center connector (not the socket shell)-- and that is what we call the 'Hot Wire-- or in your house wiring-- that will be the BLACK wire. (The white wire is the return,-- or as some might call it the Neutral. Eventually it gets back to the circuit breaker box as the 'Neutral or Ground wire.)
Does that help?

Is there a button that has to be pushed in order to turn on the chandelier? My daughter wants it to work and I can't seem to figure it out.

The chandelier only works when you open the front door. Make sure the front door and chandelier are properly secured or the chandelier will not come on. Hope this helps.

Lutron Dimmer manuals

Lutron manuals show a couple things that might be affecting you lights.
1) Wattage: If you have wrong wattage dimmer
2) Type of light bulb: Dimmers work on different types of bulbs
3) Wiring: You say you got 3 wires going to the chandelier? Why you got 3 wires? Is this a 3 way switch? Are the chandelier bulbs wired separately so you can control groups of bulbs with different switches?
Does the dimmer have 3 screws? A dark-colored screw and 2 brass screws? If so, then that sounds like a 3-way dimmer. A 3-way, is where more than one switch controls the same light.

Does the dimmer have 2 screws? Then that dimmer controls a single circuit. Your black Hot wire from breaker box connects to one screw and the black wire to Load connects to other screw.
A quick glance at Lutron wiring manual shows that Hot and Load wires connect to either screw.
The question is your 3-wires from the chandelier ... does the black Hot wire from breaker arrive in the ceiling box first? Or does it arrive in the wall box first? If your Hot arrives in ceiling box, then the Hot must come down to the switch box and connect to a screw on the dimmer >>> a second wire connects to other screw on dimmer and travels up to the ceiling box where it connects to black wire on chandelier. The white wire on chandelier connects to white Neutral.
4) Dimmer might be bad

How high should we install our chandelier over the table

It depends how high your ceiling is and the size of the chandelier. If your dining room is eight feet tall, hang the chandelier 27 to 36 inches above the table.

Have European Swarovski chandelier wblack/brown pair wire, green and blue separate wires, need to install in USA

This will probably take a meter, first prove the green is ground with an ohm meter from the green lead to the frame or case, if so, we know what to do with that.

next, I need ohm readings between the remaining three leads with NO POWER and switch on.

For example between black to brown 10 ohms, from blue to black 5. from blue to brown 5 ohms, whatever it is, or if they have no connection at all.

From there we have a good start.
