Question about HP Pavilion dv2500t Notebook

2 Answers

When i plug laptop to tv, only desktop shows, no icons, nothing.

I am using a monitor cable to plug my hp to the sony tv, and when i plug it in, the screen on the laptop goes to change resolutions, and then doesn't come back fully. all i have is the desktop picture, but there are no icons or start menu or anything. i don't even have a mouse apparently. i try pressing fn+f4 but it doesn't do anything, so now i'm pretty much at the end of my rope and about two seconds away from tossing myself. help!

You have to go to "Display" properties... (right click on desktop and go to properties)

on one of the tabs that comes up you should see 2 boxes one with a number ONE in one box and a number TWO in ther other. Right-click on the TWO box and click ATTACHED.

Then click and highlight the TWO box and underneath the two boxes there should be a checkbox that says "Extend my desktop to this monitor" and then hit APPLY.

If you have any issues with how its being displayed on your TV you'll have to adjust the size of the ONE and TWO boxes to be of equal resolutions.

(if FN+F4 doesn't work to get your desktop back, Try FN+F5 or the key on you laptop with the monitor icon)

Hope this helps!

============================================
Try the following items if you encounter problems when trying to connect a TV to the computer:

  • Certain display adapters need to have TV set as the primary display adapter before it can be recognized at all. If the computer is not "detecting" the TV as a display device when the computer is turned on, set TV as the primary display device in Windows and restart the computer.
  • Turn on the TV before turning on the computer.
  • TVs require their source setting to be changed to the video source that the video card is using. Select either Input 1 , Input 2 , or S-video by pressing the Source or Input Source button on the TV's remote control. This can vary depending on the type of TV you are using. If your TV does not have this capability, then you will not be able use it as a second monitor without using special video signal processing (not covered in this document). For more detailed instructions, consult the manual for your TV.
  • Set the screen resolution to 800 x 600 or less from Display Properties on the computer.
  • Use only one video source. Do not connect two cables to the same TV or monitor.
  • A TV accepts either a PAL (Europe) or NTSC (North America) signal, depending on the country it was made for. Make sure that the signal format of the TV matches the signal output that the card produces (for on-board TV-output, this setting can be changed in the BIOS).

I hope this helps.

Shine a flashlight on the dark screen to see if you barelysee the icons on the desktop. If so, then the LCD Inverter is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can beany kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vgacable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves yourvideo card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you rebootwithout you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN(Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correctkey for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key willnormally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

If you see no icons by shinning a flash light and the external monitor works, then your screen is bad. If you see no icons by shinning the flash lightand nothing shows on the external monitor, then most likely your video card isbad.

Are you saying the lcd screen is black? It seems like it booted up but nothing appears on the screen?

Did the laptop seem like it boot up all the way? Do you hear the fan running and the hard drive spinning?

I plugged in cable in my laptop and my samsung plasma screen and i got no picture and also i tried to search in the TV outputs for deferent choices but nothing works

Does your laptop have a toggle output keypress? It may be Fn + F3 or similar. Look at the icons across the top of the 'F' keys - one of them will have an icon with screens on it. Pressing it will toggle output between laptop screen, laptop + external screen, or just external screen.

I recently purchased a ASUS K60 Notebook from best buy. I am using Windows 7. I am trying to hook it up to my 42" inch LCD tv via a VGA cable. My problem is that when I do all I am getting is my Desktop...

Since you are using a laptop to connect to an extended monitor, follow these steps:
  1. Make sure that both the laptop and TV are on.
  2. Connect the VGA cable from the laptop to the TV.
  3. Then hold down the FN key and the function key with the TV/Monitor icon like the one below to switch to dual monitor display mode.

I have a Compaq Presario laptop with a broken

Hi:
Just plugging in the monitor to your VGA port on the laptop won't make it display. You have to toggle to the exteral display, or both. Usually you have to hold down your function key, and then hit the external display key. It could be F1 thru F8, depending on your laptop model. Mine is F6. If you toggle thru the modes, your CRT should display . The missing pin is no concern!

When i shut my laptop the tv i use as my monitor goes blank.

Right click the power icon in the system tray (should look like a little plug with a lightning bolt on it.)  Click on "adjust power properties."  Click on the "advanced" tab, then where it says, "When I close the lid of my portable computer," select "Do Nothing."
