Question about Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router
Serial Number CDFF1G2H0248
Model # WRT54G V8
DONT HAVE CD AND NEED TO KNOW WHAT TO DO
Hopefully these instructions will work with the Linksys model you have. Power the router up by plugging in the power supply. Plug in an ethernet cable from your broadband modem to the port in the back of the router labled "internet". Plug in another ethernet cable from your computer to any one of the four numbered ports in the back of the router. Hit the reset button on the back of the router. You may need a sharp object like a pen or pencil to poke it. Reboot your computer. Open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer, and type in http:192.168.1.1. A window should pop up asking for a user name and a password. Don't enter a user name and type admin for the password. Hit ok. The router setup screen should come up. Click on the administration tab. Then click on the factory defaults sub-tab. The sub-tabs are in blue just below the normal tabs. Hit yes to restore factory defaults. Next click on the Wireless tab. You can rename and reconfigure your wireless network from this screen. Next click on the Wireless Security sub-tab. You can set up encryption on your wireless network using this screen. There are several different types of encryption. I believe WPA gives better security but I've had some trouble using it on older computers. I use WEP 128 bit encryption. I've been able to get this encryption scheme to work with all of my computers. FYI, the router setup can only be accessed through one of the cable ports. This stops outsiders from accessing you router setup over a wireless connection.
