Parking brake release

A parking brake (informally known as "emergency brake" or simply "e-brake") is a secondary brake system that uses brake cables to engage the rear brakes rather than the using the hydraulic brake system which actuates both the front and rear brakes. The brake cables are pulled by a ratcheting mechanism inside a cabin which can be a pull lever or a push pedal. In either case the mechanism must be able to release the cable tension. Although rare, a problem in this mechanism could prevent the ratchet from disengaging and in turn keep the parking brake engaged. A much more common problem however is with the cables or brakes themselves. Rust and corrosion that accumulates over time can cause the moving parts to bind and not release from their engaged position. To resolve, the binding parts must be moved back into their original resting position manually and then replaced with non-rusted/corroded parts. In some extreme cases it may be necessary to actually cut through a brake cable in order to release tension and make repairs. Never heard of a parking brake automatically engaging. It does suffer with sticking brake cables. Are you sure the driver didn't step on the parking brake pedal? It is what I would have done and I have practiced it a number of times! You press the pedal a second time to release it. It is a known issue that the cable sticks, especially if the parking brake is never used.

I should have disengaged when it broke if not it is jammed some where and not releasing so raise the rear and follow the brake cable to the rear axle and remove cable try rotating wheels if no joy remove wheels and tap brake drums and try rotating drums if still no joy try stripping brake system down on rear axles to free up internals

OK, The cable is Broken. So, What you need to do is, Folow the cable and, Release it by Hand. Please be sure That the transmission is in Park. At the end of the cable the steel wire should still be attached. To the release tab just pull the release tab or you may be able to pull the end of the broken Inter Cable. You'll need to place your, Head under the steering Column. To see the E Brake Assembly. You can't miss it.

i would say either the cable is disconnected at either end or it has broke. the easiest way to see would be to have someone work the handle by ingaging and disengaging the brake and underneth the car usually more towards the drivers is where the cable runs and by engaging it you should see it move then you can trace it in both directions and see if it is hooked up. if it is hooked up then i would say the cable has broke inside and would replace it

You need to lower the underdash shroud. Couple 7mm nuts hold it on. Look to the left at the parking brake pedal. Follow along a black sort of tube to the end. That end will have a cable comming out of it. Follow the cable. The cable is attached to the parking brake release lever. Pull the cable or the release handle and the parking brake should release.

You have a rusted e-brake cable that's not releasing after applicaiton.

Sounds like the release cable broke. Does it have a lever near the driver's side dash to release? Check the bottom of the vehicle for a length of steel cable laying on the ground. To release, try grabbing the cable with a pair of vice grips and pull toward the front of the vehicle, this should engage the release to let the parking brake off.

Either remove the drivers side rear wheel and disconnect linkage or cut the cable from underneath (do this as a last resort... if you want to keep your emergency brake for future use, you'll have to replace the cable.)

adjust the park brake cable first (3 pedal clicks and brake should start to engage the rear wheels) then lube the park brake ratchet release parts (under the dash) with WD40, this should take care of the problem.
