How old is the refigerator- what relay is it and please state make and model.

Older refrig's use a mechanical relay that would make noise- newer models generally are solid state and would not make any noise.

HI, Was the compressor clicking on and off? You might be able to smell the relay because they are known to burn out. If you do have to chane the relay, I would advise you to change the capacitor if this model has one.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.

it sounds like the start device failed, unplug the machine so you don't cook the pins on the compressor, pull out the machine and remove the back bottom panel and on the compressor you'll see the start device, remove the clip holding it onto the compressor and when you have it out shake it,if it rattles you'll know it's bad and you'll probably be able to smell the burnt stink on it,the part number is 2304884 and it's around 40 bucks, let me know how you make out

Refrigerator stopped, power OK, no sounds coming from compressor

Really this is one of two things. The compressor is shot, or the device that starts the compressor is shot. Whirlpool uses good compressors, and finding bad ones are rare. There is a device connected to the side of the compressor. Sometimes it is held in by a clip of some sort. I would unplug the frig first, then remove the device. This is called an overload relay.

Quite often the relay is burned badly, or visually damaged. You will also be able to shake it and hear a rattle. There is not supposed to be a rattle. This means it is broken and replacing this should get your compressor started! :D

Freezer will not cool,i.e.freeze food.Compressor is very hot.

The compressor may be overloading because of a bad relay. The relay is on the side of the compressor. Disconnect power from refrigerator then remove the cover and remove the relay. Then shake the relay and if it rattles it is bad.

Kenmore side by side refrigerator is not cooling or freezing

Sure sounds like a PTC relay bad. Take the relay off and shake it to see if you can hear a rattling sound.

The clicking sound is a relay called PTC relay. You need to replace it. First be sure to unplug frig. Remove the cardboard cover that covers most backs of the frig units. Remove the plastic cover that is on the side of compressor. It is held on with a metal clip. Now you should be able to see the relay pry the relay straight off. note the wiring and position of relay. Only three prongs on compressor. Go to a parts house for appliance's and with your make and model number should be able to get a new one. Let me know if you need any more help. ken

Refrigerator and frig on side by side not cooling. Inside lights are on so power is available. Not compressor sound when I turn the cooling knob to colder. Whirlpool ED25RFXFW01

if the fan in the freezer is running go to the compressor and see if you have 120 volts ac to the compressor relay, normally a white and red wire will be connected to the relay,
if you have 120 volts to the relay, remove the relay and if it is white shake it if you hear a rattle in the relay it has a set of burnt contacts in it and will have to be replaced if you have 120 to the relay and no rattle in the relay then a compressor problem

if no 120 to the relay check the cold control, the defrost timer
