Dear kreemoe,
You need to go into your Extensions Manager (which is in the Control Panels) and ensure that the CD drive extension is ticked.  Your discs should show up.  If the discs don't please email me, and I will perform a more thorough investigation for you.
Take care,

You may not like my answer either but I can tell you I've been working with Macintosh for over 24 years. Your running an Intel 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac. It sounds like the power circuit is damaged. What you describe is classic for a bad or damaged power circuit.
You can run it down to Apple and have an Apple Genius look at it but before you do try some of the steps in the following Apple support article it may help confirm what the issue is.
Good luck with it Ed

Disk copy error on a macintosh, cannot download

Disk copy error is shown by PC when your CD have damaged or have many scratches. Sometimes, this problem occurs because of old or damaged CD/DVD Drive. Try to copy any other CD/DVD which have good condition. If it also not working check your CD/DVD drive to your dealer.

The driver doesn't show up when installing on a Mac for Lexmark X2500

Hi susan_craver. Try to
double-check if the cd says it's
compatible with Macintosh. There
are also drivers available for
download in the Lexmark website.
Before downloading, check the
version of your operating system
by clicking on the apple icon on
the upper left corner of your
desktop. Click on About this Mac to view the version. To download, just click on this link. . Click on the dropdown for Macintosh at the bottom of the page. Choose your operating system. Download the driver. Install it in your computer. Hope it will successfully install the software this time. Good luck!

I mac g4 kernel panic cant boot from CD to format . got kernel panic after security update. No Driver for this platform

This message indicates that the CD you are attempting to boot from is a release of the Mac OS which is incompatible with this model of Macintosh. I would recommend a retail disk of Tiger or Panther for this vintage Mac.

My exterior Apple CD 600e will not show on the desktop of my Maci

As I recall, this is a SCSI device. Like many electrical connectors, SCSI connectors can develop a light corrosion which can keep the signals from being transmitted. The easiest way to clean such light corrosion is to shut down the Mac & power down *all* SCSI devices in the chain. Then gently unplug & replug all SCSI connectors. This will scrape off much of the corrosion & usually results in connectivity being restored. Be sure to unplug and replug the SCSI terminator attached to the last device in the SCSI chain. Restart by powering up the SCSI devices and finally restarting the Mac. Good luck!

Apple Macbook Pro was dropped. Will not boot. Screen is grey with flashing file folder with question mark inside. Thanks Dan

I believe that's a sign the HD is bad. However, I've not worked with the Apples in a very long time. (Remember the Macintosh Classic?)
