Question about Dishwashers

1 Answer

Whirlpool Dishwasher GU2548XTP- Dishes still dirty after it has run, especially the top rack. 5 (?) yrs old. Runs and grinds intermittently, no water seen under unit. Sometimes I add more water when it grinds, then it runs very quiet. Sometimes it doesn't seem to fill enough. Water supply good, inlet screen inspected not clogged. Not a lot of pressure shooting the water around the inside of the unit, as the detergent that bleeds through the slotted half of the detergent flip door isn't rinsed out after the initial five-minute cycle. It also seems like the inside of the glasses on the top rack are barely wet and the outsides are chunky. There is usually enough (and hot enough) water in unit. Replaced the computer brains a few months ago (after re-booting a few times) because it was sticking on a count-down time and NEVER moving off it- Problem got better, still happens sometimes. All the filters and spinning arms are clear/clean. I think it is the motor/pump, so I'm asking here because I don't want to spend any more time or money in case by diagnosis is wrong. I'm more than game to try and replace. Is this fairly easy??

The inlet valve is OK, therefore the control board was not the problem.

The impeller pump is noisy and inefficient, and must be replaced.

Here is the part: MOTOR

And PUMP

They are respectively Assembly 10 and 14 on the diagram below:

It is difficult to understand if pump, or motor, or both are noisy. Check if the pump is clogged before replacing it.Or replace the whole assembly.

To replace the part follow instructions here: Do-It-Yourselfer' stories about installing this part .

Regards.

Dishwasher leaves upper rack dishes dirty. It's Whirlpool Quiet Partner II

Your water pressure is not high enough in the dishwasher to wash the dishes on the top rack. The most common reason is that the pump in your dishwasher cannot pump fast enough to keep the water pressure up. That is because the shaft that drives the pump impeller also drives the macerator cutter that grinds up bits of food fine enough for it to pass through the screen and out to the drain. Over time, small bits of bone, broken glass, eggshell, and other items that are too strong to be cut up by the cutter end up sitting in the area where it has to spin, and they prevent it from spinning fast enough to pump enough water to the top rack with any pressure. It is simple enough to repair. You need to take out the racks, remove the bottom arm and clean out the little macerator. Once that is done, it should work great again.

Hello,

Welcome to FixYa.

Based on your description you`re experiencing the same thing 99% of folks with this type of dishwasher do...eventually.

The good news is it is likely just a clogged up or dirty sump assembly.

Here`s what you can do, I find removing the top rack to be the best place to start.

However I also find sometimes visual "how to" instructions are better than explanations, therefor I`ve attached a video for you to check out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iRCCrEwrst8&NR=1

This should help you get to the pump filter, spray arm and check for food deposit, broken glass, undissolved detergent and general water deposit built up in the sump well.

The key is to get in there and clean it all out, This will be applicable to most Whirlpool, Inglis, Kenmore, Kitchen-Aid, Jenn-Air.

When you`re finished run it through a test cycle and see how it goes. You may even want to run it empty with just a bowl of "white vinegar" on the top rack for a dishwasher bath.

Let me know how you make out and what you find.

Good luck.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

The top rack does not get clean. There is a dirty

Most likely the "food grinder" screen is clogged, which limits the flow throught the pump, leaving thehigher dishes unwashed. It's flaw inthe design of whirlpool/kitchenaides. Not only does the screen clog but the teeth on the "grinder" wear down, the girneder does no grinding, and the food particles build up onthe screen, clogging the water flow. Open up the collector, pul out he choer/grinder and clean the screen. Check the teeth on it and if worn, repalce the chopper/grinder. If it happens again , then the choper/grinder driving mechanism is basd -- replace the pump/motor assembly.

Make sure not to prewash your dishes before you put them in the machine. The water needs to be dirty to activate the enzymes in the detergent. Are the dishes coming out cloudy? Also a sign of prewashing your dishes. Use only powder detergent and clean your machine by running 2 cups of vinegar on hottest cycle once a month. No gel and no tabs. They cause a build up in the unit and causes poor performance. Use rinse aid. Hope this helps.

Kitchen aid dishwasher doesn't clean dishes in the top rack

Sounds like you have 1 of 2 problems. Either your pump is clogged or you need a bigger drain loop.

Top rack dishes are not clean

My Whirlpool dishwasher is only 2 years old and I started having the same problems. I dismantled everything I could and washed and scrubbed the entire unit with EVERYTHING..to no avail, dirty dishes!! But I discovered a remedy! Try using Lemi-Shine for about a week with your regular wash-soap. If you are using the tablet form of soap, stop and try the powdered form. Follow the instructions on the Lemi-Shine container. You can find it just about anywhere for around $3.50. I was within "5 seconds" of replacing my 2 year old Whirlpool dishwasher when this caught my eye and I figured why not try it too? After the first wash I noticed a big difference the cleanliness of the dishes..and now it is running GREAT after 2 weeks!
