Question about HP Pavilion ze5185 Notebook

1 Answer

Need an internal wiring diagram for the 14.8 volt battery pack.

I disassembled a 14.8 volt battery pack for an hp 5185 laptop. I am looking at the pack and have the new 3.7 volt batteries. But, I got side-tracked and can't positively remember how to connect the internal wiring like it was originally. Next time I will take a video of the disassembly process. I really need a schematic, or I will have to forget this project. Where could I go for a schematic?

Check this link for more info about batteries and voltage

in your case you need to connect 4 pcs 3,7V batteries in serie. (wire between -battery+ -battery+ -battery+ -battery +

if you have 8 cells you connect like this

-battery+ -battery+ -battery+ -battery +
| | | | |
-battery+ -battery+ -battery+ -battery +

if this was any helpful please rate my solution.

Gateway mx 8710 .plugged in no charge has new battery

There are 2 possibilities:
1. The internal charger does not work,
2. You received a defective battery (some after market batteries are very poor quality batteries).

Engine revs picking up then dropping and occasionally missing 2006 etec 250 and revs drop off when flat out if power trim is used.

Look into these items first. Main battery leads, Power supply wires have too much resistance and need replaced or trim motor is shorting internally or short in trim circuit. also look at battery voltage to insure it is charging. I like to see 13-14 volts on the battery just after starting the engine.

Red wire from battery off, where does it go?

It broke off of the circuit board. Actually I PURPOSELY cut both of the battery wires OFF! This makes it much easier to work on the internal gears.

Just buy a separate 12 volt power pack and stop using the internal batteries. The scope functions better on a regulated separate power pack. Buy the proper 12 volt cigarette lighter style power cord.

I never use the internal batteries and have removed them completely from the scope. If they leak they will ruin the circuits inside the base of the scope.

I would like you to go here to,
Where it states -> File: 5185v10.zipVersion:--Release Date:-- Download
I would like you to click on Download.

You will see a small window come up. Click on the empty circle to the left of -> Save

Unless, you have your downloads going to your My Documents folder (Start>My Documents) this will wind up on your desktop screen. It will be a yellow folder icon with probably -> <- under it.

Double-click on the yellow folder icon. You will see 6 PDF files.
5185-1.pdf, 5185-2.pdf, and so on.
To open them and look at them, you double-click on each one, one at a time.
Then in the File Download window, you click on Open.

In 5185-2.pdf, it shows you the Front Panel header, and where the Front Panel wires go.
(Not trying to insult your intelligence. The Front Panel is where your Power On button is. The Front Panel header is on the motherboard. A connector on a motherboard, is referred to as a Header)

Should somehow you can't download this PDF Motherboard Manual, I will try to explain the connections on the Front Panel header. Bear with me.

Viewing the motherboard with the processor up at the top, ram memory to the right, the Front Panel header is on the bottom right. It is the JFP2 header.
(The motherboard manual, clearly shows this header as being the JFP2 header. Then it states it's the JFP1 header. Believe there was a misprint. You'll know)

It is situated lengthwise up and down, parallel to the right side of the motherboard, with two rows of pins.

The pins are numbered 1 through 20. There are spots where there are No pins. Where there is no pin, I will state -> No connect

Starting at the top on the left side, and coming down.
Pin 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, No connect, and 10.

Starting on the top right side, and coming down.
No connect, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, No connect, 2, and 1.

1.Pins 18 and 17 are for the Reset Switch
2.Pins 16 through 13 are for the internal speaker
3.Pins 12 and 3 are for the HarDDrive activity LED.
4.Pins 10 and 1 are for the Keylock Switch
5.Pins 8 and 7 are for the Power On switch
6.Pins 6, 5, and 4, are for the Power LED
Pin 6 is the Positive connection, (+)

This motherboard uses an ATX 20-pin motherboard power connector.
It is at the top of the motherboard, and goes across lengthwise.
There are 20 socket holes.
Pin 1 is on the top left. It uses an Orange wire. (3.3 volts)
Pin 10 is all the way to the right. It uses a Yellow wire, (12 volts)

Is this an old laptop? If it's relatively new, I'd say send it back under the warranty and avoid the aggravation.

Laptop freeze when in ac charger

You really should have a cheap multimeter to help in this case.
There are three possible failures; the new battery pack has a shorted cell, the charger is defective or a regulator internal to the laptop is failing.
With meter, you can check two of the three areas; the battery pack and the charger. Depending on which kind of batteries are used in the pack, if it is charged, you can determine if it is completely functional by checking contacts on the case of the pack. The most common type of battery used is the nickle-metal hydride type (NiMH) which has a nominal voltage of ~1.2 volts.  If the pack is rated 6 volts, you could measure either 4.8, 6 or 7.2 volts with the last one the most likely. If it measures 4.8 or 6 volts, it probably has one or two cells shorted, making it useless.
The charger could measure all over the map; many of them are unregulated and if they are rated at (for example) 9 volts, they could easily put out 14-20 volts when they do not have a load on them.
If those two items seem to check out OK, then the regulator in the system has gone bad. This might be on a separate board inside but to check it out, you really need some technical experience, otherwise you don't really know what you are seeing or looking for.
