Ricoh Aficio 550 printing very light

The copies are all coming out very light, changing the darkness has no effect.  The toner tube seems to have plenty of toner in it.  I read that the toner tubes have to be able to hold a "charge" and sometime they can't even if they have plenty of toner.  Is it possible a new toner tube would fix the problem?  I'd like to explore the simple posibilities before calling out a service person.  Are there other simple solutions to try to fix a copier that is printing out very light?

Your machine will need to be serviced by a tech guy, the charge you spoke about on the toner is only when it is in the dveloper or in a magnetical toner which isn't in this machine, it is in other small laser machines like faxes and printers an also canon copiers, it is called mono component toner, you probably will have to change the developer or drum or both s well as check the coroners, if you are changing the drum you may as well change the blade as well because i

The toner is only charged when it leaves the tube and goes into a seperate container called the developper.

Try this : open top and make a copy of the ceiling.

a black sheet will come out. is it very light ? try adjusting the darkness does it change?

What I'm going to tell you may be a little technical, so if you do not feel comfortable doing these test, then you will have to call a service tech.

The problems could be coming from these areas, none of which are quick fixes.

1-developper not transfering enough toner, take it out and see if it has a dark coat of toner or can you see the actual roller.

2-drum is worn and is losing it's charge

3-transfer rolller a wire needs to be replaced.

My bet would be on the drum.

Ricoh Aficio 550/650 prints so light that you can barely see anything on copies. Have changed toner and have tried image density; nothing helps. Ideas

Verify TD sensor, you change the develop and Performs the TD sensor initial setting.
1) Press the following keys in sequence.
Total clear yellow key, 1 0 7 and
Hold the clear stop key (orange key) for more than 3 seconds, to enter at service mode.
Enter 2801 and execute...
This SP mode controls the voltage applied tothe TD sensor to make the TD sensoroutput about 2.5 V. After finishing this, theTD sensor output voltage is displayed. It must show a value near 10 Try use original toner.
If this does not solve the problem, replaces the cylinder, and perform id sensor.

Tonner and cartridge clogged wont print dark

Why do you say it's the toner? Likely the PCU (photoconductor) needs replacing, or laser optics, etc.
If it's not a 'blinking toner light' that won't go away, but rather light copies for no apparent reason, then replacing the PCU is the most likely cure.
