Question about Maxtor Hard Drive

1 Answer

Maxtor D740X-6L 40 GB drive won't start up.

Computer was running OK, suddenly a blue screen says that Windows has to close. (Windows XP). Upon attempted restart, hard drive seems to spin up, but only a loud, slow clicking is heard, like a circuit breaker resetting. Screen is blank except for a blinking underline style cursor. After a while, message comes on screen "Windows could not restart because file is missing or corrupt." File identified is \system32\NTOSKRNL.exe "Reinstall a copy of this file and restart."
How do I correct this file if I can't even get the computer to start?
Thanks,
Steve

Put your windows xp disc in the drive and boot up from it, run windows repair or failing that reinstall on the upgrade option to keep your files and programs.
If that fails, you will have to do a full instal.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Just want to install this in a different computer, but computer won't reboot. wants to open in safe mode or last good config. Tried jumper in every location, although it is master

If this hard drive was moved from one computer to another, it is likely not booting because of a hardware discrepancy. If you're using Windows XP, this is common when moving from a machine with a single-core processor to one with a dual- or greater- core processor. It also happens when moving from an AMD processor to Intel or vice versa.

on the hard drive is a pic showing you how. the maxtors are pretty complicated but still solveable. if you are using one cable for two devices (hard disks/ cdroms) one has to be master and the other slave. cable select doesnt always work that well with different vendor products

You cannot recover bad sectors. Your disc is damaged and the drive has removed the bad sectors from being writable. You need to replace your hard drive asap before it breaks entirely. You're going to lose all your remaining data on the disc if you do not back it up immediately. Good luck, Peter
