Sounds like you have a broken drum belt. The click you hear is the motor starting and thgen a slight purr is it running.

You will need to secure a belt and maybe a few other parts. You want to remove the cover and see if you need glides and or bearings (\depending on who made your dryer) A list of "overhaul parts list" for dryers include
1 Belt
2 Idler pulley or assembly (keeps the drum belt tight)
3 Front Glides or bearings
4 Rear Glides or support bearings
5 a vacuum to clean out dust and lint while open
6 Inspection of the Fan/blower impeller and clean as necessary.
7 And advantage here you get to keep any change you find.

Hope this helps you. Even if you decide to call someone in for the job He will only partly do it if he just puts on a belt and doesn't show you the conditions of the other parts. Ask him to let you see these parts as he comes to them and help you decide to reuse them or replace them.
Please raste me as high as you can and thank you for using fix ya.

Have a Whirlpool GEQ9800LW0 and it won't start. When I set the timer and push the start button nothing happens. The timer still makes it's usual clicking sound but the dryer won't start. What needs...

Check power to the inlet valve, if absent let the program move forward and if the motor does not work either it is possible that thetimer though ticking is not contacting.
So go back to check for the wash cycle, when start is pushed, inlet valve on, water comes in, water fills , triggers level sensors, washing starts with motor on.
If there is no voltage on any parts ,the timer contactor is faulty

Kenmore dryer not running

Ticking sound is the timer running--so it is not the problem unless a contact has failed or a wire has come loose.  Broken door switch, thermostat failed in open position, or clogged lint filter/exhaust vent/outlet would keep unit from running.  If you can hear the motor running but the drum is not turning then the drum belt is broken.

Check the door switch. A little lever sticking down through top rightof door opening. If it is not there you will need new doorswitch(sometimes the little lever breaks off). If it is there and doesnot click when you press it in you need a new door switch. if it clicksand clicks when you close the door then you have a bad thermal fuse. The thermal fuse is found by taking the back of the dryer off. The fuseis an oblong white plastic piece with 2 wires attached.

Door switch part number 3406109
Thermal fuse part number 3392519

Whirlpool dryer won't start. replaced the door switch & the push button switch still won't start. the light works when door is closed. can hear timer ticking like always.

It sounds like you have lost a leg of power. Turn off both breakers, then back on. Then check the receptacle, the plug and then the wiring to the back of the dryer. This is likely where it is. There is a thermal fuse located under the top of the dryer. Easy to get to. Bypass it and if it works then, just replace it for about 15 dollars.

Faulty Start Button?

If the dryer doesn't even start to turn when you press the start button, then you have to look at a couple things; The start button itself, the starting relay or the safety circuit. You mentioned that there's a ticking sound... if this sound goes away when you open the dryer door but comes back again when the door is closed, then the safety circuit is working.

It could be the switch itself or the starting relay (if equipped with one). If you're mechanically capable, consider looking at the relay. See if the contacts are being pulled in when the start switch is pressed (DANGER: HIGH VOLTAGE). If it is, the start switch is OK.

Hope this helps.
