Picture goes in and out after 20 minutes of air time

My picture is fine for about 20 minutes then it looses all picture for 3 to 5 minutes then resumes picture for another 10 or 15 min. then it goes out again. The tv shop tells me it's a digital board but the part is not available, when I opened up the back, it doesn't even look like the theife opened and looked for himself. I already blew out the color wheel and the fan is operating, unfortunetly the problem did not occur whilr the back was off so I dont know if the bulb is going on and off. Any help from the experts is appreciated. The same thing happens with our t.v. it will work fine for about 45 minutes with dvd, xbox, etc.. and a couple of hours with cable. Then the picture just cuts out and starts flashing different colors. The TV Ch 3 will stay on and green and the sound is still good, the damn picture just goes out. its annoying. Help please!

that sounds like a good idea, but i dont know what the circuit board is or what it looks like and how would i install the fan? i took the back off earlier and dusted everything that i could out and tried to find a diagram for the tv or something on line that would tell me what im looking at. im so lost and fed up with this stupid t.v. would the employees at radio shack be able to help me? i dont want to take up too much of anyones time : ]

Welcome to overheating problems
buy a can of component cooler at radio shack then while the tv is on and, not working with the back off; spray the circuit board parts until the problem goes away then install a small 12v computer fan to blow air over the offending overheated chip etc. the cooler is only freon and, will not cause a spark it is safe to use on live circuits

OK; the circuit board I'm talking about is the one that the power plug goes into that is the power supply

what most people do (after the waranty runs out) is add a computer fan to **** out the hot air thats causing the chips to fail

I suggested the coolant spray because it does not require expensive tools like oscilloscopes, multimeters etc.

the manufactures know that they need bigger thicker TV cabinets but, the public want slim cabinets

Radio Shack personell do not know much of anything I'm sorry to say...sorry you're so frustrated

Kassandra,
The following I posted several times today and it looks to me that we all have potentially the same problem.

I had a similar problem.
My TV started to flicker and I put a new bulb in. The new bulb did not help, even if it is good to replace after a couple thousand hours.
I found out that my heat sink, which is sitting on the CPU with the mirrors came loose and the unit overheated and shut off after flickering a while.
Try to take the lower back panel off and you see a heat sink which is sitting in the center of a aluminum sheet metal piece. Disconnect the wires which are attached to the circuit board behind the sheet metal. Then take off the screws holding the sheet metal and pull it gently off. It will take a little force, but it does not damage anything. Now you see the heat sink on the circuit board held by a latch going across the heat sink.
On the upper right corner you will find the handle to open the latch. Once you did it , you can take the heat sink off and see the main CPU (as I took the latch off, my heat sink fell off).
On my heat sink the Heat Sink Compound Paste creating the connection between the CPU and the heat sink dried out and became brittle, son there was no connection anymore and the heat couldn’t be transported out through the heat sink, which is cooled by a fan on the left.
I took the brittle Heat Sink Compound Paste off and applied a generous portion of the one that I bought at Radio Shack. I used a Silicone-Base Heat Sink Compound which ran $4.99 excl. tax.
After applying the paste put the heat sink gently in and when you do, you will feel like a suction indicating that you have a connection between the CPU and the heat sink.
Now you need to put all parts back together.

If you are not familiar with electronics and those wires or wouldn’t hurt or would be wise to mark the connectors and to make pictures before removing them. This will save you a lot of frustration.

I hope this helps you and brings your TV back to life. My TV was cutting out after 25 minutes and runs now like a charm.
Good luck.

PS: If you experience a black screen with vertical stripes (mine were white and green) then most likely the light engine needs to be replaced, I had this after 9 months and got it fixed under warranty

I can turn on the tv and it's fine for about 20 min then the screen goes black with sound. I turn it off for a minute and it's fine for another 20 min. Like it's overheating.

It might also be a bad solder connection, short of checking voltages what I have done in this type of situation is with back off use a small fairly high speed fan - a hair dryer set to cool works, to cool areas of the boards inside to localize which board is causing this, with the set in failure, got it? it goes out cool it with a handheld hair dryer with air set to cool, when you find the spot where the problem is it will either instantly come back or try to.

Do it a few times to confirm which board is bad and locate a replacement board and swap it out.

Have a kv-35s40, and when turned on picture goes on and off, sound is okay all the time. after about 10 minutes, picture then stays on, an tv works fine. only happens when first turned on.

Hello
Your TVs Base card socket, that is the socket connected to the base of the picture tube is loose. Just unplug it and replug again for tow or three times. Please note for any loose sodering occurs to the pins of the socket and the video output transistors fitted on the picture tube base card. This should rectify the problem.

I turn the sistem on and abaut 20 minutes it turn

your system is overheating, clean the vents with a vacume so you **** the dust out, dont use a can of air, this will just push the air inside the unit and make matters worse in time. also you can buy intercoolers for the ps3 this would help you from overheating. (the system shuts off to preserve its self)

My Sony comes on then both sound and picture goes black.

After being on a little while, the screen goes black (no audio as well) for 20 to 30 seconds. Green light stays on. Then, picture comes back on and takes a couple of seconds to get up to full brightness. About 5 seconds or so after the video comes back, the audio returns.

Until this morning, has only happened a couple of times a day, now happening more often. About 3 times in last 20 minutes.
