Computer works on AC adapter but battery does not charge

I have an IBM Thinkpad T42 that works perfectly except that the battery will not charge. I Have tried two batteries and neither work. When first plugged in the battery indicator will blink for a while, then turn solid yellow, but the battery never charges. I installed a program called Battery Status v0.98 beta that does not recognize either battery whne they are installed. The Battery MaxiMizer Gage is blank. I was told on one forum that there is a fuse between the system board and the battery that might be blown

"hi,there might be the issue with dc in cable(cable from jack to m/b) ..."

Please be more specific. What sort of issue?

    "... or the inverter board."

Isn't the inverter board part of the LCD assembly? What would this have to do with the battery not charging?

Everything works on this computer. The only problem is that the battery will not charge. I have tried a 2nd battery with the same result.

I have IBM thinkpad when i want to open the laptop sometime its open but sometime it could not help me to solve this problem

Hi,

Im very sorry to hear that, please follow these simple steps for you to be able to isolate the exact problem.

1. Removed the battery.
2. Connect the laptop directly to the power outlet without using the battery just for the meantime.
3. Turn on the laptop. If the laptop is able to power on, that means that the AC adapter is working fine as well as the DC port. If the laptop is not able to turn on, it maybe the AC adapter itself or the DC port.
4. Try to use another AC adapter if possible, make sure that that AC adapter is working fine. If the laptop is still not turning on, the problem is with the DC port itself. In that case, you will need to replaced the Motherboard itself.

Hope this will help...Thank you for using Fixya...

My laptop computer ibm t42 does not charge the battery

Hello....those T40 series laptops which I use to support at a previous job. They would often develop these same issues. We would often keep them in stock because after a while the batteries just don't hold a charge. Its not that the laptop is not charging them. The battery simply does not hold the charge.

My previously healthy Thinkpad T42, will not post.

Hi,
The Thinkpad T42 doesn't have a reset button on it like the older IBM's used to.

There could be a problem with the battery. With the machine turned off remove AC power and then the battery. Plug in AC power again and see if the laptop will boot without the battery.
If it boots let it load up as normal and then shut it down again, reinsert the battery and try to boot it up. If it boots fine, if not then there is a problem with the battery.

Please post back if you need anymore advice.

Good luck.

IBM Thinkpad T42. About 1hr ago went black-dead. When the power supply is plugged in there is no icon illuminated. No power reaching anything. Recently have had some fan-error warnings and have been...

Check power adapter’s DC plug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltage should be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that is printed on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced.
If the adapter is OK then connect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/battery charging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's power socket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position this LED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a dry solder joint where it is connected to the motherboard.
This can be repaired but it requires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket and repair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.

IBM thinkpad t42 new Battery "On line, critical"

The only way is to continue using it that way till it will not go off when you unplug.

The charger might have gone bad too.

Try the first method then replace charger.

I keep losing my connection - IBM Thinkpad t42

Are you using IBM SW or Windows to manage the wireless? Occassionally, the IBM SW has issues with certain model routers and encyrption types.

You can also try unchecking the "Allow Computer to turn this device off to save power" in the adapter properties and

Adjusting the power on the wireless device to the max. By default IBM sets it in the middle to conserve power.

T42 is not starting

Try doing a manual system reset. To do this:
1. Remove battery and unplug AC adapter.
2. Press and HOLD power ON button for 30secs. at least
3. Put back the battery and plug back the AC adapter
4. Power ON the laptop as normal.

My T42 suddenly wont recharge the battery or wrk off mainsadapter

If the Laptop wont work off the power adepter, it also will not charge. The adepter could be bad (even if showing a power light) or the connector on the laptop could be broken. The best test is to take the battery out, attach the power adepter and try to start the computer if it starts, your battery is at fault. If nothing, suspect eh charger first. Be sure the pin on the Laptop power connector isn't bent or broken.
