If installed properly the drive will show up under "my computer" or "computer" under the start menu. You can drag and drop files or folders to and from it just like any internal drive.

Had a seagate free agent given as a present but i have lost the manual and don't know how to operate it. how do I transfer files and how do I download them onto another PC ?

Hi vic_barnes,

You don't need the manual to operate the external hard drive , all you need to do is connect the drive via the USB cable and your computer should accept it , and then you would find a removable drive visible in your my computer option.

Then you can open this drive and copy your files to and from it.

Hope this helps ..:)

I have simply forgotten how to put stuff from my computer on to my external hard drive. I know it was pretty easy, but nothing cpomes up on my screen to go by. Thanks, Rochelle

The process is dependent upon whether you have an Apple Macintosh or Windows PC-branded computer. I will provide instructions for both.
Windows
Plug the hard drive into your computer. Then follow these steps.
1. Click the Windows logo button in the lower left corner of your screen to open the start menu. 2. If using Windows XP, click 'My Computer' on the right side of the menu that pops up. If using Windows Vista or Windows 7, click 'Computer'. 3. The window that opens will display all of the hard drives and other similar devices connected to your computer. Look for your external hard drive. Typically, the letter of the alphabet assigned to the drive will not be 'C:/' or 'D:/', but some other letter further down the line. 4. Double-click your external hard drive's name or icon. Another window will open. This is the contents of your external drive. 5. To copy files to the external hard drive, first locate the file you wish to copy wherever it might be on your computer. Then, click on the file you want to copy and while holding down the left mouse button, drag it into the window for your external hard drive. 6. The file is now copied. The same action can be taken if you also wish to copy whole folders.
Macintosh
Connect the hard drive to your computer, typically via a USB port.
1. The hard drive should show up as an orange icon on your desktop. Double-click this icon to access the contents of your hard drive. 2. To locate files, click on the smiling, rectangular face-shaped icon in the lower left corner. This is the Finder, and it allows you to find your files. 3. Once you've navigated to the file(s) you desire, (these are generally located in the folder along the left side of the window labeled with your name) click on the file names and drag them to the external hard drive icon, which is also located in the left sidebar of the finder window.
This will copy the files to the hard drive.
Hope this helps. If you would like more assistance, feel free to reply to this solution.
Thank you for using FixYa!

How do i clear the contents off my ext drive.

I have the same drive that I re-format periodically.
You can format it just as you would any hard-drive.
Plug it in - go into My Computer - Right Click on drive - Use "format" or "Properties"

Seagate external drive locked in "read only" ,was working fine...

This seems to happen when it's been connected to another computer. Are you running FreeAgent Sync? If so force a sync and the read only problem should go away.

I download songs into my Itunes but the C: drive still decreases

The external hard drive will have a different drive letter than the default hard disk (C:). So in iTunes, you need to configure a different location to store your songs.
Just open My Computer and you should see the new drive letter.
Alternatively, you can move other files from the C: drive to the new external drive.
