Question about Craftsman Garden

1 Answer

Craftsman riding mower repair starter will spin but not engage. The gear on top of the starter spins but will not lift to meet the flywheel. If I pry it up a little it will engage and start the engine. How can I fix this without buying a new starter.

You need to buy a Starter Drive Kit. If you starter has a flat piece on top held on by a retaining ring, it's part # 696541. If you have the older type starter with roll pin holding the drive on, you need part # 696540. You probably have the first one. To install the retaining ring, use a 3/8 socket to tap it into the groove. Dwain

Starter just makes a whineing sound wont engage

Sounds like the solenoid on starter is bad. A solenoid kicks the gear out to meet flywheel, If its bad the starter will spin and not engage. God-Bless!

917256490 Craftsman Tractor 28n707 engine. When I try to start the thing that pops up to engage the flywheel ( I think that's what it's called ) just sits and spins

What your talking about is commonly called the starter drive. If the starter itself is whirling over fast enough you can probably get away with replacing just that. Available thru Sears or any small engine facility which sells parts. If you attempt the job yourself do yourself a favor and order an extra lock ring which holds the drive on the starter shaft. You'll see why when you attempt to disassemble or assemble it. There's a lot of tricks to keep your eye on them when they go flying but it's better to have 1 just in case.

New starter motor and bendix. will not engage with flyweel. starter motor just spins.

Starter motor spins, but does not engage
  1. Check the starter motor for a seized or binding pinion gear.
  2. Remove the flywheel inspection plate and check for a damaged ring gear.

Starter gear doesn't move up to engage flywheel gear when started

The solenoid does two things -- it closes an electrical contact to run the starter motor, and also pulls a lever to slide the motor gear up to engage the flywheel. Since the contact is closing, the solenoid itself must be OK, but the lever could be broken, or the sliding gear could be binding or stripped. Since you're looking at a probable replacement, try cleaning with compressed air, then squirting some WD-40 into the starter gear area - you could get lucky! Otherwise, you can replace the starter/solenoid assembly -- you can find replacements on eBay for about $80. Less expensive but more time consuming is to remove the assembly, disassemble, and replace just the defective parts if you can find them. Good luck! Please rate my answer if helpful, thanks.

Replacing starter

The gear / part on the starter is commonly called a "bendix" gear, and it rotates into position only when the starter switch is engaged in the "start" position. As soon as you release the switch to the "run" position, the starter' bendix gear drops down so that the engine's flywheel can spin without causing the starter to turn as well. Just re-bolt the unit back to the engine, and reconnect your battery cable.
