Lexus 1979 2JZ engine start but shutdown after i select gear

Make sure that the transmission is in park or neutral. Possible to have a bad neutral safety switch.

You must go back and remove the timing belt to re-align the marks for the cam and crank. There is no other way to adjust.

My 2008 GFM Lexus IS350 has been having the same problem as described in this thread for the past few months. I decided to take the car in on July 10th. When I described the problem to the service advisor, he said it might have something to do with the cam shaft and that I will need to leave the car at the dealership for a few days. I picked the car up on July 15th and have been driving the car the past serveral hours, with serveral start ups, and have yet to encounter the problem...only time will tell if the problem will reoccur.

26241 Intake camshaft gears oil leak down. Replaced bank 1 and 2 with improved camshaft gears per TSIB#L-SB-0156-08. Repair completed.

Sounds like you have a bad spot on ring gear try turn your engine by hand then try and start it then if it is a bad ring gear it should start then

read the owners manual on the operation of a tiptronic box. It will probably state that the manual selection of the box is for keeping the gear box in set gears to prevent unnecessary gear changing. So when going down hill select a gear manually and that will use the engine braking capability instead of up shifting as the rpms increase
It is fun to use the tiptronic as a manual box but that is not the real purpose of the transmission design.. IT is to lock the transmission into certain gears to prevent unnecessary up and down shifting of the transmission

check the main earth or negative ground between the engine in the chassi..hope it work

Hello, This problem results from the Temperature information not going to the ECM. In short, your car needs to know it needs the "Cold engine" cycle to kick in. This cycle sort of acts like a choke with respect to enriching fuel requirements, but also changes the timing for Cold start conditions.

What you are trying to do is start a cold engine with warmed up engine settings. This is why you are having your problems. Go to a good Autoparts store and ask what you need in the way of Temperature sensors for your dash and engine controls and then install the new parts.

It is not a solution, but i HAVE THE SAME ISSUE ON MY 1996 lEXUS es300. My engine just shut down while I was driving, and would not turn on unless I replaced the fuse. Every time it shutdown, it was when there was someone on the passenger seat. Did yours die when there was someone on the passenger seat?
