Hi, the computer i need to back up from is not working, I would need to get the information drect from the hard drive.

It is this adapter I need to find out about to plug directly into the hard drive to be able to access the data.

thanks all for your comments! Do I need to buy an adapter with a power supply? and Whats the chances of blowing it up.....

There are several ways to do this. You can remove the laptop hard drive and physically connect ito another computer as an additional hard drive. That would require some kind of adapter and the type required would depend upon the type of hard drive in the laptop and the type of connections available on the other computer.

The other way to do this would be to network the two computers together (if the laptop is still working right now). This would require connecting both computers to a network hub, switch or router via Ethernet cables or wireless. Or they can be connected directly with a crossover Ethernet cable. Or you could even connect them through the parallel or serial ports with the appropriate ccommunication cables (commonly called LapLink cables after the software that was originally used with them for transferring files in the manner) for those and the files can be transferred directly from one machine to the other.

So the questions that need to be answered are these: Does the laptop still run right now? What operating system is running on each computer? And finally, what would be the easiest way for you to connect these machines and transfer the files?

Your best option would be to pick up an Apricorn DriveWire universal drive adapter. This way, it doesn't matter what kind of drive you want to attach to your USB port since it will take laptop and desktop IDE and SATA drives. It runs between $30-$40 and is available through CDW and Dell. You may be able to find it at other locations as well.

The DriveWire I noted earlier comes with its own power supply since you cannot draw enough power for the drive motor from the USB bus itself.

Hi there.
I think they are talking about a USB Flash drive, you plug it into the USB port and the computer sees it as a storage/removable device and you can get one up to 16 GB.
Depending on how much data you need to back up depends what media to use because you have the option of DVD's too.
Backing up to a flash drive is an excellent way of backing data up so i would seriously consider that option because it definitely works.

    Ahh.
I'm working on the assumption that its a desktop PC that's down.
You may as well buy a 3.5ins enclosure for the hard drive, now there are 2 different types,
SATA enclosure and IDE/ATA enclosure's they are fairly cheap to buy and you can make good use of the hard drive which was in the other machine.
All you have to do is find out which type of hard drive it is, look at this pic >>>>>

The one at the top is IDE/ATA, the one at the bottom is SATA

    Sorry,
Its the same with laptop hard drives except the enclosures are 2.5ins instead and are cheaper

Best thing to do would be to order one from the manufacturer, even if you could find it online that's illegal, and with this specific of a thing you probably won't find an iso.

Hi my wd 500 g hard drive will not open on my computer... when i plug it in the light starts flashing but nothing else happens.. it doesnt even show up on the computer... i dont know what to do i have so...

Try unplugging the power cord from the hard drive and leave it it off for about a minute. Then plug the power back in. If it still doesn't show up, restart the computer. You can also plug the hard drive into a different USB port. Hope this helps.

Hi, I have a "please wait" error showing an a Ricoh aficio 2027,i have changed the H.D.D but the prolem still shows, also i have fitted the faulty H.D.D in another machine of the same type and it works...

The "Please wait" error is almost always caused by a fault hard drive. Have you tried running a disk repair utility like Scandisk on one of the hard drives when it's attached to a computer? Maybe the "new" hard drive you put in was also bad. (It doesn't take many bad sectors or other problems for the copier to not be able to use it.)

If both of the hard drives are truly good, the problem could be the hard drive controller, which sits on the main controller board, and you'd have to replace that whole board.

On calling anyone they cannot hear me

Are you using speaker phone? Are you using the Hand Set?

If you are using the speaker phone, the first thing is to check the back end configuration of your IP phone system and Make sure that that Station has the Microphone Feature enabled. If it does, then the next step would be to configure a different phone with your same extension and ip. If that phone works fine, then it tells you that it is the microphone inside the original phone that is bad.

If it doesn't fix it, then the problem lies on some of the settings within your phone system.

Some other simply things to try if using the Handset, is 1) Replace the cord from the telephone base to the handset. 2) Grab a similar headset and hook it up to your phone. Test calling someone internally in the office, and out of the office.

Bad hard drive back up and replace on evesham ebox

The only thing I can think of is you might hook up the drive as "slave" drive on a working computer and see if it will operate long enough to retrieve your data. But if the drive is dead you may have lost everything that was on it. There are services that do data recovery on dead hard drives but I'm sure it is expensive to have this done. This is why I always back up everything I do to a different device while I am working.
