Question about Kenmore Kitchen Ranges

1 Answer

Oven not about 100 deg. below temperature setting

I have an approximately 3 year old Kenmore electric range model 790.96412407. Within the past month or so the oven has not been heating properly... if you set the oven to 350 deg. at the end of the preheat cycle a thermometer only shows 260 deg. This is new behaviour as this oven has always if anything been a bit too hot. I tried changing the oven temperature sensor but that did not solve the problem. Both the old and new sensor show 1090 ohms resistance at room temperature. I am guessing it is either the bake element or control board that is the problem but dont know how to eliminate one or the other.

Thanks for the quick reply. The element shows continuity, and after removing the bottom panel (this is a hidden element model), and turning the oven on, all parts of the element turn a uniform red color. Would you say then that the control board would be the problem, or am I missing another possibility here?

I am a bit hesitant for 2 reasons. One obviously is the cost of the control board. The second, which is more disturbing, is that when I started researching this problem on the internet I came across a multitude of stories of Kenmore model 790 oven elements heating out of control to the point of catching fire, sometimes without the unit being turned on from the panel. Although I have never seen any symptoms close to this, I would be messing with the same components.

It's easier to eliminate the element. You can do this two ways;first thing, remove power from unit.Unplug it and you know for sure power is off.Inside the oven you can get to the wiring on element by removing the two screws on the back wall that holds the bracket to the wall.(this works for both elements)Pull the element out and you will see the wires(2).They will be either screwed on or connected with spade clips which pull on/off.Remove at least one wire and use your meter, set on ohms, put a meter lead on each element connector, you should read continuity. If you don't the element is bad, replace it.Give the elements a good visual inspection first, some times you can see where the element burnt out.The other way to get to the wiring by pulling the back panel off the stove.Hope this helps. Why is a Kenmore elec range model 665.92004102 have oven temp lower by 100 deg at settings of 400, 450, 475 and 495; while off 150 at 350 deg setting?

There is a problem with the oven probe sensor or EOC. To ensure this problem is fixed both parts would need to be replaced. This could cost more then $300 to have repaired.

It could possibly be you are not getting 240 volts to the range. The top igniter may be getting a current back through the other side of the 240 circuit and that is why it works when the oven is turned on but the oven will not be getting power to heat. Have the 240 circuit checked or make sure the circuit breakers are reset correctly.

LG LRE30451 won't maintain temperature

Check the oven temperature probe (thermister) to see if it is good. To check it, use a multi-meter and Ohm it out. It should be between 1100 and 1600 Ohms. If it is out of tolerance, you will need to replace it. Here is the part to order.

Hello there:
Whenever you get the dreaded f-3 code this is the code that tells you that the temperature sensor is going bad or already has gone bad and needs to be replaced immediatly. It should look something like this and cost about 50 dollars

Kenmore oven and brolier will not work

The problem lies within your oven control board. This is very common and are not very hard to replace but they are expensive. You can check the price of a new control board at sears parts.
