I just turned on my camera to take a picture and had the SAME issue. I'm about to freak out, I am having a baby any day and this is NOT what I need to have happen right now!

i bought the w1 then it died with the same problem... brought it to a camera repair shop for an estimate, and they said it would cost about the same for a new one, so i bought a w7. reason for buying the same series is because i have lenses, underwater case, and a lot of other add on... unfortunately, the same fate happened to my w7... TURN POWER ON AND OFF AGAIN!!!

    its really annoying...

Holy cow. I CAN'T BELIEVE that just worked! my camera's been having this problem forever and I tried everything, except the obvious; smacking it! I just saved so much money because I was so close to buying a new camera.

Just a slight "palm encounter" should work perfectly!

I had the same exact problem with my W5. After doing some research I found that hitting the bottom of the camera against my palm worked perfectly. This has worked for many others with the same problem. Start by hitting it lightly and increase the force until it retracts when you turn it on. I hope this helps.

The camera is stuck in the shutter mode

Hi John,First thing to try is restarting your phone.Hold the power button on the top of your phone until it shows the red arrow with "Slide to power off". Slide it. When the phone has gone dark hold the power button again until the apple logo shows. When the phone has finished give your camera a try.
Good Luck!

CAnnon Powershot A630 LCD screen will not light up when trying to take a pic. I can, however view old pics that I've already taken.

First press the DISP or DISPLAY button to see if that corrects the problem. If not, a stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).
To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

New pictures I am taking with my camera are showing up completely black. I can view previously saved pics on the SD card on the screen, but any new pics only come up black. Any ideas what this could be?

Show only black when trying to take pic/video

This problem is caused by a stuck shutter assembly. Normally the shutter is open which allows light to enter the image sensor and show you the live preview you see on the screen. When you take a picture the shutter closes which allows the image sensor to record what was seen at the exact moment the shutter closed. The shutter is stuck closed, causing the image sensor to always be in the dark. These shutter assemblies are extremely small and delicate. The miniature parts can become jammed with just the slightest bit of oil or contaminant, or the slightest misalignment of components. The problem can sometimes be fixed by gentle tapping of the camera on a solid surface. If you are going to try this be VERY careful, and do not tap the camera on the buttons, lens, or battery door. If this does not solve your problem then the camera is going to have to be taken apart and the shutter cleaned and reset to allow free movement. This repair costs $125 to $145.

Digimax i6 pmp SHUTTER problems!!!

Congratulations on fixing the problem! However I just wanted to let you and everyone else who reads this solution know that the part which failed on your camera is not actually the shutter. The shutter is deep inside the lens assembly right next to the image sensor. What you were dealing with was simply a protective cover for the lens. David Millier Advance Camera Repair
