Question about Cobra Li 6000-2 WX VP GMRS/FRS Two-Way Radio

1 Answer

Cobra LI7200 I just received a pair of Cobra 2 way Model LI7200 and I cannot get them to work with each other. I can pick up other people sometimes but I cannot communicate between the two radios. We are on the same channel and the volume is turned up. The call and the talk to not work. I got the same problem with my cobra Li 6700 radios. One of them didnt't work with other radios, but the other one did. Obviously it's a manufacturing problem. I'm looking for the electronica schematics, since i opened my radio and i found to variable resistors and a variable capacitor. I'll try to find out if adjusting them my radio could come back to life !

I didnt move anything. I just checked some variable resistors, but that's all.

These are the tests I performed.

    Reference: LI-6700-2 WX VP.

I tested both radios, but only Radio "A" works.
    Radio LI-6700 "A" , Serial number R834031609, does work
    Radio LI-6700 "B" , Serial number R834031599, doesn't transmit nor receive

    Tests:
    1. Communication between LI radios. Radio "B" doens't receive transmissions from Radio "A". Radio "B" couldn't be able to establish Tx communication with Radio "A".
    Channels proved: 1 upto 22
    Modes proved: CTCSS and DCS

2.Radio "A" Tx in Channel 6, DCS or CTCSS. Scan performed in Radio "B" locates Rx in Channel 21 with a very poor signal, but nothing in Channel 6. Frequency slipping ?

    3. Test with FRS220 Cobra Radios. Both FRS radios TX or RX to/from Radio "A".
Nothing happens with Radio "B". Both LI 6700 radios, A & B configurated with exactly the same parameters.

    Conclusion:
    Manufacturing problem of Radio "B".

Yeah, goog trouble shooting for someone who doesn't know what CTCSS privacy codes are. But certainly I do. I did set both radios with the same parameters, channel, privacy codes and everything. Solution: To buy another better radio, maybe a motorola.

It was helpuf since I corroborated how bad cobra radios can be.

Also, I sent an email to them and they didn't give any solution.

    Thanks everyone

Please don't touch any internal adjustments. It is like a 10 digit combination lock that is set to open. If you start changing the numbers, you will never get it open.
I think the problem is with your tone coded squelch (CTCSS). Your radio channel is like a telephone party line. If your CTCSS is not on, everytime you turn your radio on you will hear anyone on that channel that is close enough to hear.
If you are trying to use these radios for serious communications, that will drive you nuts to hear everybody else talking but not about what you need to hear. To try to mitigate this problem, CTCSS was created. There are 38 different codes. If you for example set your unit to operate on code 11 and your other unit is set to operate on code 12, you could not hear each other.
Now let's add a third unit set to not use CTCSS at all. Neither one of you will be able to hear this third unit but he can hear both of you. Now you set the second unit to code 11 like the first unit. Now you will be able to hear each other. The third unit will still be able to hear both of you but since he is not transmitting code 11, you still can't hear him.
If you are hearing some traffic, it is because they have their CTCSS set to the same code that you are set to. Look in you operators manual for CTCSS Privacy Codes. Set your radios accordingly and I think you will be in business. Let me know if this doesn't take care of you problem.

That looks like some good trouble shooting. Sometimes all it takes is for some one to give you a little push. Good luck with getting radio "B" fixed.

Give me a rating if you still can. If I don't get a rating, the boss will think that I am asleep at the terminal. If I get a bad rating, I'll be fired and if I get a good rating, I'll be promoted. LOL :)

Cobra Bluetooth CB pairing problems

Did you hold the BT button for 4 seconds or for 6?

I would try it starting fresh- first without pulling the fuse and then with pulling the fuse first and waiting about 10 minutes before installing the fuse again. Then start with the procedure as if it never had been connected to a blue tooth phone.

If you do not have the manual anymore, it can be downloaded here:
https://www.cobra.com/downloads/29WXNWBT_MANL.pdf

Even if you have a different model CB, Cobra uses the same setup for most of their line.

I have a cobra cb for a rig. I can only pick up if iam right beside someone. If iam alittle ways behide I can only hear a word or two that they are saying. Is there something such as " a blue screw...

Odds are it is your antenna or coax more likely coax or a ground issue with them.
Make sure your antenna in mounted correctly a pinched coax can have a dramatic affect on reception.
Beyond that Cobra has a hit and miss record on quality control but there is no magical blue screw. There are 9 tuning coils that if tuned incorrectly will degrade or make your reception intolerable. A receive alignment for a reputable shop would improve the reception even though this is most likely not the problem.
It is possible that you have had quote "the front end" damaged referring to a pair of diodes but that usually happens when your radio is close to someone running a lot of power. Truckstops are good for that.
