Check your volume controls on the computer itself
Make sure the mic is turned up as well as the wav and line in
If not turn them on and make mute is not checked

You are better using a firewire cable if your camera supports it - that way it will transfer the video and audio together.
I had a similiar video camera a few years back and had to purchase a firewire card for my computer as it had a firewire port but did not have one in my computer.
The JVC web pages ( support / faq ) always to most of the time are very good at walking you through what you need.
