Fisher & Paykel dryer will not tumble

The dryer will not tumble and a buzzing sound can be heard. If I shake the dryer slightly it may commence tumbling but extremely slowly and an electrical burning smell is produced.

Thanks. I have removed the belt and although it is about 10yrs old it was still tight around the drum and looks in pretty good shape, only a bit worn.

I will look for a replacement belt tomorrow. If you think it could be anything else before I go looking for parts please let me know.

    Cheers

    Paul

I have replaced the belt as advised by the earlier expert and this did not fix the problem.

I have replaced the belt and capacitor and the dryer now tumbles. However it will now only spin anti-clockwise and when it is due to change directions, it will just stop and a slight burning smell results. Any suggestions as to the problem would be appreciated.

Will I require a professional to align the rotor or rewind the motor? This issue seems to be getting more complex.

The most probable cause is motor bearings are failing. When the motor bearings fail, the rotor is dragging on the stator, and causing the motor to run slowly. Shaking the dryer causes the rotor to dislodge from the stator somewhat and turn slowly.

Replace the motor.

You may need to check the alignment of the motor of the dryer. This I think needs to be rewinded or align the rotor.

Check electrical connection for any lose contact. burning smell sometimes due to loose connection of electrical wiring. check the switches for any loose. open it and clean using compress air or vacuum. Beware of electrical shock sw. off before removing cover.

Many clients are facing this same problem as yours.they replace many unnecessary parts but nothing solves the problem.but the actual problem is not the belt.its the capacitor problem in the machine.that is faulty so machine is not tumbling and making the buzzing noise.
to get the capacitor
Take the back panel off & search around motor for a small round white plastic capacitor with two wires attached. If this has failed then motor will groan & struggle to start. They usually bulge out on the ends or sides or even split open when faulty. just replace the capacitor,it don't cost very much.the number of capacitor will be mentioned on its body.just get the samne exact capacitor and fit it.its easily available at local electronics hardware store.

thanks.please do rate the solution.thank you for using fixya.keep updated.

Dear, Checked the belt, This could be a worn out or loose belt. thats why the motor is giving the sound and smell is due to the friction with belt.

You can get to it through an access panel on the back of the machine.

Just make sure the power is disconnected first!

Hopefully a replacement belt will be easy to obtain in your area.

Regards

I am much sure about belt problem but it could be a capacitor problem, it also produce the similar problems. You can check it too, but safety must be on priorities.

Good luck in correcting your problem.

I found advice on the Fisher Paykel web site that suggested the problem could be the door lock. In fact the catch had not properly engaged & when I fixed that the dryer worked.

Fisher Paykel dryer

buzzing sound generally come from the motor assy, not necessarily a bad motor however. try opening the front door and along the inside of the top of opening is 2 phillips screws the top will tip back and then removing 2 5/16 screws from inside the font panel will remove giving you access to the motor blower assy.. it is possible that something( baby sock, small undergarment) has fallen inti the blower preventing free spin also resulting in a buzzing noise, if so simply remove debris and reassemble.
