Yes, you have to buy the games from the iTunes Store. If you purchased/downloaded games from the App Store through iTunes, those games will only work on the iPod touch and iPhone, not your iPod nano 3rd Gen.
Games that you buy in the iTunes Store will only work on the iPod. Other games that you buy in stores (Wal-Mart, for example) or elsewhere, they do not work on the iPod. Apple controls what items can go on the iPod.
