Not a problem as such. I am wondering if I can swap a 2.40 gigahertz Intel Celeron on this pc, with a 3 gig 'multiprocessor" from another pc, to make this one just that little bit quicker?
Comments:

May 29, 2009

- Board: P4M266A-8235

May 29, 2009

- Do I have to have any drivers, or will it just boot up as normal, but quicker?

May 29, 2009

- That is excellent news for me then I hope. Cos if that is so, the cpu from here, can go to other pc if it fits :) Thanx a heap for the answer, and theank you more for the quick response. *adds this site to favourites*

May 29, 2009

- Ok, I just swapped, they fit in perfectly :) When I booted up, I got "warning CPU has been changed. Please setup CPU HOST clock in chipset features setup" How would I do that? And in belarc, it now says "1.50 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4" Right clicking on "my pc" and clicking properties, in the system it says...
"Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
1.52GHz, 1.50 GB of RAM" and device manager says in "processors" it says "Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz" twice. Please explain lmao

May 29, 2009

- Sorry, i don't know... I mean, I know how to get into the bios, but am not exactly sure where it is I am going. In the second option I think it is, it did say something about hyperthreading enabled....
Thanx a heap, its greatly appreciated for your help.

May 29, 2009

- Yeah, I know how to get there... its to a actual place "chipset features setup" and to set the clock that I don't know... the clock that was there... is the right date and time and such.... so is there somewhere else?

May 29, 2009

- I didnb't reset the bios, but when I rebooted just then, the warning didn't come up.... maybe just going into the bios and back out, fixed it?

May 29, 2009

- Ok. That be fixed then. Next query is about the exact GHz of this cpu....

May 29, 2009

- XP media centre edition sp3.
in belarc, it now says "1.50 gigahertz Intel Pentium 4" Right clicking on "my pc" and clicking properties, in the system it says...
"Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
1.52GHz, 1.50 GB of RAM" and device manager says in "processors" it says "Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz" twice. Please explain lmao Is it 3.00GHz or actually 1.52?

May 29, 2009

- You gotta love jotti. I was on the award (my bios) site and was seeing if i may have needed to upgrade my bios (i don't). But yeah, it said to download and run bios agent plus. ANyways, i uploaded it to jotti and it is bad lmao.

May 29, 2009

- On siw, it says "cpu name" as the 3.00GHz nothing about 1.52 or anything... and lower it says "dual core: no" "hyperthreading: yes"

May 29, 2009

- Error 404. Bad site. Site mcsstudios.com doesn't have a site which is correct with adress you entered. Maybe incorrect address has been entered or this site doesn't exist anymore.

May 29, 2009

- CTFLASHC.exe (which i will upload to jotti) is supposedly my update for bios. 3 months newer than the one I got now. Wish me luck lol. Now just trying to find the chipset drivers. Is there a program (free) that does all this? lmfao

May 29, 2009

- CPU Clock Speed 2793.0 MHz Clock multiplier x 14.0 Front Side Bus Frequency 199.5 MHz Bus Speed 798.0 MHz And at the top, it says "number of cpus 2 (1 physical). I guess the hyperthreadfing makes it 'think' its a 3.00GHz...?

May 29, 2009

- Oh, i don't mean to put you outta a job. I mean, a free program like the "update driver' in device manager lol A program that gives the right drivers. Not a prog that tells us the prob, or what the prob is. That is where you would come into it :) Cos (before i found out about jotti) i would clicked something that said "here is your update" and I woulda updated it, and boom... comp dies lol Follow what I mean?

May 29, 2009

- V Series Chipsets: VN800, VN896, VX700, VX800, VX800UT, VX820, VX820UT That is on the via website. But, I need VT8751 :(

May 29, 2009

- Overclocking..... bit scared of that. My other pc (where this cpu came from) was brilliant, had neons, bout 4 fans... and yeah, the weather got to be about 46 deg celcius here... and comp shutdown, and rebooted saying overclocking failed and i had to reset it. I had to idea... and well, after that... bout 3 restarts later... my motherboard fried. Hence y i got this POS atm :)

May 29, 2009

- Thank you. Have downloaded it and done it. Under mainboard.. i see... manafacturer... well there is none. Model is P4M266A-8235 x.x Chipset VIA P4M266 (VT8751) Southbridge VT8235
LPCIO ITE IT8705

May 29, 2009

- I have a proggy that lets me know what drivers need to be upgraded... but there is nothing to do with bios or chipset (though, there are a few things that need updating lol. half are done already, just using device manager)

May 29, 2009

- well, I would... BUT, I have flashed bios yet OR found the updated n chipset drivers hehehe

May 29, 2009

- *goes and studies manuals* Than a lot. Sorry for the bit of a slow reply, was just puttin the old cpu from here, into other pc (instead 1.8 it now 2.4).

May 29, 2009

- Sorry to be a pain. Models on site... P4M266AS4-A06A (and -A07A, -A22A, -A31A, 259A, 298A) but I can't see -8235 which is the one I need (so the cpuz says is my model....

May 29, 2009

- I seen that in the part number... I was lookin in the models and thought it shoulda been there too lol. I get the atx not the mirco atx yes lol. I feel like a complete noobi when it comes to this stuff... other pc areas I am pretty good though :)

May 29, 2009

- Micro has only 2 ram slots, the atx has four right? Mines only got 2 (grrr...) which means I have the mirco atx. I am pretty sure, I just answered my question, but confirmation would be even better lol

May 29, 2009

- Just opened up and had a look. I have 4 slots... but, am bout 3 short of using all the slots (at back of pc)

May 29, 2009

- Well, lookin at them pics, I have the ATX then. Thanks for all your help Lee. Has been highly appreciated

Hi there.
Yes you probably can but the processor you want to put in has to have the same pin array (socket type).
look here for more info on sockets >>>>>>>>

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CPU_socket

Good luck and thanks for choosing FixYa!!

Comments:

May 29, 2009

- No you won't need any drivers for the processor, and it should boot quicker, just make sure processor you want to swap fits the socket.

May 29, 2009

- Hi again.
Don't worry about what it says in device manager for the moment.
To setup CPU HOST clock, you have to go into the bios and to the chipset features setup, but, you don't have to do that, all you have to do is reset the bios to defaults, that should reset the CPU clock automatically.
I'm assuming you know how to get into the bios setup, if not please post back.

May 29, 2009

- Ok to get into the bios, restart the machine, the bios key will either be Esc or Del so keep a finger pressing both keys as the machine restarts, you'll know when your in the bios

May 29, 2009

- Did you reset the bios to defaults?

May 29, 2009

- Yep!!!
That's what is said, if you set the bios to defaults it auto corrects the CPU clock so the problem is fixed straight away

May 29, 2009

- What do you mean? what its running at now?

May 29, 2009

- and are you using XP or Vista?

May 29, 2009

- Its more likely to be running in tune with the system ram now, so what you need to do is benchmark the CPU.
Go here and download MCS CPU Benchmark 5 and you'll be able to stress test the CPU >>>>>>>

http://www.topshareware.com/MCS-CPU-Benchmark-transfer-40392.htm

I also recommend you update the bios and reinstall the chipset drivers.

May 29, 2009

- Here is something else for you to look at regarding your processor.
Pay particular attention to the Front Side Bus and the Bus Speed and compare the frequencies to the Clock speed, that should answer your question

http://www.audioease.com/Pages/Altiverb/DellAE.html

May 29, 2009

- To get the chipset drivers just jot down the make and model of the motherboard, go to the manufacturers support website, find your model and get the chipset drivers from them.

lol, and if you could get a FREE program that did that then i'd almost be out of a job lol

May 29, 2009

- I'm not endorsing this in any way, but if you use torrent sites, look for driver detective or driver doctor

May 29, 2009

- The clock speed is 3GHz, the front side bus is the speed the processor runs at, so where its say's the processor is 3GHz it actually runs at 1.5GHz this his helped a hell of a lot by the system memory, the more memory you put in the better the processor runs.
There's also a thing called overclocking.

May 29, 2009

- Thats not the chipset i don't think.
Download CPU-Z from here, it should pop up to save straight away, execute the CPUZ file and click on the mainboard tab, then you will see the real chipset number. >>>>>>>

http://www.filehippo.com/download_cpuz/download/64d750a18c50c4e75d767b3396f60aee/

May 29, 2009

- Cooling is a serious issue when it comes to overclocking, yours should work fine now you've updated all the important stuff, you deserve a cool drink and a sit down lol

May 29, 2009

- you can get the chipset driver here >>>>>

http://www.nodevice.com/driver/P4M266__IG_/get37398.html

and bios here >>>>>>

http://www.pcpartner.com/support/bios/VIAKT.HTM#p4m266

Before you update or flash the bios make sure you read the manuals on how to flash first.

May 29, 2009

- Go back to the bios page again, and its the one thats coloured orange, the code is VT8235

May 29, 2009

- If yours it the ATX then yes

May 29, 2009

- a good way to tell the difference is to count the PCI slots (cream coloured slots) if the board is ATX it will have about 5 slots, if its Micro ATX it will have 2 or 3, the ATX boards fit right down to the bottom of the tower

May 29, 2009

- look at these boards >>>>>
ATX

Micro ATX
