Question about Toshiba Tecra TE-2100 Notebook

Replaced Toshiba HDD but won't boot from recovery CD

I had to replace my Tecra TE2100 HDD with same model HDD. I have gone into BIOS and set CD to be first to look but get to Boot Agent and get a PXE-E61 - media test failure check cable and PXE-M0F - Exiting Intel PXE Rom. This is running on XP.

Any help would be appreciated

No the HDD is brand new and I was assuming by loading the original Toshiba recovery disk this would set XP up. Is this not correct?

ametehan - its brand new and looks fine but I have no way of testing it

I can get to where it is asking for a system disk after the two PXE error but it wont recognise the recovery CD as a system disk (should it?). trying to boot and hit F12 doesn't seem to work and sometimes its getting stuck at the initial Toshiba screen and showing it is searching the HDD and other times it goes straight through to Intel boot Agent and then the PXE errors and system disk request.

Put the disk in the drive and restart the machine, when the toshiba logo appears press F12 and use the cursor key to select CD/DVD and hit enter.
See if it lets you boot from the CD/DVD drive.
Please keep me informed and good luck.

    Ok,
Try resetting the bios back to defaults by restarting the laptop and hitting F2 as it starts, once in the bios just set it to default, hit F10 and select OK, the laptop should restart with CD as first boot device.
Try that and get back to me.

Toshiba Tecra M1 what are hdd format procedure?

Formatting a laptop is the same as doing it on a desktop computer.
If you are using the Windows installation CD then to get the laptop to boot up with the Windows CD you can change the BIOS boot startup device and make the CD the first boot device.

Your hard drive may have gone south. Remove it and check with diagnostic software. Bad sectors in critical areas of operating system data will do this.

What are the steps of formatting toshiba tecra M9 using window XP Recovery Disk?

If you are using the original XP Recovery Disk for Toshiba, you have to set your first boot to CD/DVD Rom from our Bios setting or use the 1st boot Function Utility when booting up.

If your 1st boot is your CD/DVD Rom, the Recovery Disk will boot up, and your just follow the wizard to finish the OS installation back go the default setting.

Hope it helps.

Unable to format, partition, ins. os and boot my toshiba TE2100..

The CMOS needs to be set to first read the CD or DVD drive before it reads the Hard drive. Once your XP disk is in the drive it will boot from the CD drive and setup the computer, The CMOS is acessed by turning on the computer and immediatly pressing either the deleat key or the F! or F2 key try each one till you get to CMOS then look for boot section. Set CD drive to first your HD drive to second.

Replaced hard drive in Toshiba Tecra M9. Laptop.now refuses to re

Look on the back edge of your old HDD where all the gold pins are and on one side there is a group of 4 pins in two rows of two... and see if there is a tiny jumper installed across two of them (white or black about 1/8" tall and 1/16th wide).

Now look on the new HDD and see if there is one there. The NEW HDD must be set up exactly like the OLD one or it won't be detected by BIOS or Windows.

I am beginning to think your LT has the CD as MASTER and the HDD as SLAVE, which may require adding or removing a jumper. Some new ones come with, some without ;-) I didn't think of this earlier

Check that. Email me the result

Try borrowing a compatible HDD instead of buying a third one for testing and check if the same error exists. Try also using an external DVD drive to see if your internal CD-ROM is defective. Try also using another Windows XP CD installer. You can also use other OS installation CD to check it. Otherwise, there is something wrong with your lappy's motherboard due to tear and wear, heat, vibration, misuse and shock.

Answer to your question

You will need to get into the bios, and set the CD drive to boot before the hard drive. Since your in this uncompromising loop, remove the hard drive, then start the machine. It should go to the initial Toshiba screen and you will see the prompt on what to press to get to the bios, or utility set up. Once your in the bios, find the boot order and set the CD drive over the hdd. Then put the hdd back in, the recovery or operating system disc in the CD drive, and start the machine. It should now boot from the disc. At this point you will want to do a system repair. If the repair doesn't take, then reformat the hdd, and install a new operating system. If the hdd will not format or you have any issues during or after the install, then the hdd has failed and will need replaced. If you need any futher aststance, just ask.
