Question about Ryobi Garden

1 Answer

Ryobi SS30 trimmer starts fine and runs at when in full choke position to about half choke position. But when I put the choke lever to the full run position, it stalls out. Ryobi ss30 same problem of stalling out at full throttle. Ran ok at about half way between half and full choke. Now, will not start. Also, Home Depot where I bought unit does not carry priming bulb which deteriorated within a year.

I have the same issue with my two older units.
you need the adjusting tool to adjust the idle and full speed circuits, the units are set lean when new and need to be adjusted as the engines loosen up and wear.

Priming bulbs are available for few dollars, I assume this is the Zuma Carb, with about 5/8 dia bulb and two screws holing a frame.

You need to rebuild the carburetor. You will need to go to an outdoor power & equipment store of some kind to get a carburetor kit for your specific trimmer. It will come with various gaskets, (some of which you won't use), a needle valve, and a small screen that goes in the carb. Replace all old parts with new. New primer bulb is sold seperately. When you have the carb. apart, you will also need to clean the small ports with a Den Tek Brush (used for cleaning teeth). Use carb. cleaner when cleaning.

Ryobi CS30 Trimmer starts and runs in full choke and half choke but stumbles and stalls on run. Not up to full rpms when in full choke and half choke....

You probably need a slight carburetor adjustment. Try to turn the L mixture screw (the one near the bottom of the carburetor on the air filter side, closest to the engine) 1/8 to 1/4 of a turn counterclockwise. These mixture adjustment screws ( L and H) have odd heads on them and conventional tools won't turn them. I use an automotive type plastic wire connector (around 22 gauge) with a ring terminal end which I can hold. Tap the plastic end of the wire terminal connector onto the head of the screw with a small hammer and this will enable you to adjust the L screw. This adjustment will increase you high speed side and possibly allow it to run off choke in a regular manner.

Gas Trimmer will not stay started

Many times with a gas mix, after sitting for a while, the mix separates and gums up the carb. Taking the carb off and soaking it overnight in a parts or carb cleaner and running carb cleaner through the tank and gas lines will cure this.

I have a Trimmer SS30. When I run it I must keep choke at half setting with full gas. If I put it on run it stops. After awhile even on half choke it stops.

You probably just need a carburetor adjustment. At half-choke the engine is getting an overly rich fuel mixture. This is normal procedure during warm up, but after a couple of minutes, a leaner mixture is needed. That is where adjusting the carburetor comes in. It probably has a Zama or Rueiing carburetor. I use small automotive type wire connectors (plastic) and lightly tap them onto the irregular heads of the adjusting screws. These are marke L and H respectively on the carburetor. The L screw is always closest to the engine. Here is how to make the proper adjustments. If this doesn't work then a good cleaning and/or rebuild of the carb will be needed. They periodically need this done at any rate after a couple years or so. Please view this:

I have a ryobi weed eater clean carb change filter and spark plug wont run off choke

I have the same problem. It will run if I put it halfway between Half Choke and Full Choke. But, just dies if I put it on Run or Half Choke. Don't ever loan your WE to anyone, They might just try to run it on straight gas--That is what happened on another week eater that I had.

It wont start

First, make sure that the gas mixture is correct (gas and oil mixed in the right proportion). Next, press the primer bulb 3-4 times, turn the choke lever on to Full Choke, and pull the starter cord until the engine seems like to wants to start, but dies. Next, switch the choke lever to Half Choke and start the gas trimmer, giving it gas by pulling on the trigger. Once it has warmed up fully, you may be able to reduce the Half Choke to No Choke, although my 20+ years of experience with dozens and dozens of models tells me that many trimmers run better, although smoking slightly, when you keep them at Half Choke. One last tip, when pulling the cord, try pushing the trimmer away from you with the opposite hand at the exact same time that you are pulling the starter cord--the equal and opposite push-pull technique may sound like something from karate (and it is, in a way), but it is really helpful when trying to start trimmers. Best of luck, Bill

PS: Check you owner's manual (at home or online) for the proper gas/oil mixture. Empty any old gas out and replace the spark plug, if required.

I have a Ryobi trimmer and when I start it will not stay on

Here was my solution:
I was having problems with my ryobi cs30 weedeater also. It would start up fine on full choke, but i could not give it more than half throttle or ever take the choke off or it would stall out. I replaced fuel mixture, spark plug, spark arrestor/exhaust, fuel lines, cleaned carb, and still nothing! I was considering getting a better machine. Then i decided to play with the carb adjustments.(on my cs-30, they are two screws on the carb that have a "L" and "H" next to them) I dont think you can get the specialty tool for adjusting the carb unless you are a repair tech, so i just took a Dremmel tool with the circular cut-off wheel to the head of the specialty screws and made them into "flat-head" screws so i could adjust them with a regular screwdriver (if you dont have a dremmel too, get one!) (As i was cutting into the head of the screws, i also cut into the casing protecting the head of the screws that was in the way, this does not cause any damage to the unit, that casing is only there to keep "un-certified" people from adjusting it for themselves.)
Now to the easy part: The "L" screw adjusts the idle fuel mixture and the "H" screw adjusts the full throttle fuel mixture. turning the screws clockwise make the machine run leaner (less fuel) and counter clockwise makes it run richer (more fuel).
-I started out by turning each screw 1/2 turn counter clockwise and started it up, then as it was idling, i started adjusting the "L" screw as i was moving the choke position to run, after a few full turns counter clockwise of the "L" screw, it was idling perfectly in the run position, then i did the same thing the the "H" screw while holding down the throttle and i got it to run perfectly in the run position. Now it is running way better than it ever has. I hope this helps everyone.
Good Luck!

Problem with gas trimmer staying started

Carburetor is out of adjustment. there are two carb adjustment screws on the side of the Carb. they require a special tool that is only $5 from your local mower repair dealer. those screws are the idle and Hi speed mixture adjustments. the carbs on Ryobi are set too lean. turn counterclockise to richen the mixture. just turn one eigth of a turn at a time. start w the hi speed.
