Ok.. Remove the battery from your camera for more than a day, it helps you to reset it as default.

There's a diopter adjustment knob above and right of the viewfinder. Turn the knob while peering through the viewfinder until it comes into focus.

Canon EOS 450d not clicking on AF mode

this may have to do with the lens rather than the camera, try swapping the lens with another one and see if the same problem happens in AF mode with the new, borrowed lens, also remove lens and check that the gold connector between the two are clean carefully wipe with a dry q tip but be careful not to allow dirt to fall into camera body.

My canon EOS 450D battery loses power within 5mins

If it's an original battery, call Canon, if you've only charged it once, I expect the camera is still under warranty. I've had lots of dealings with Canon Photography, the usually give extremely good customer service.

If it's a cheap one you bought of ebay - that's why!

On the Canon eos 450d, how do you change the protrait option to single shot?

You can't. In the PIC (Programmed Image Control) modes, the camera software controls virtually everything. I'd recommend shooting in AV mode. This will allow you to make virtually any change you feel you need. I, myself, always use AV mode and customize my settings to my liking.
