Question about Hamilton Beach TrueAir 04161 Air Purifier

1 Answer

My Air Purifier will not start. Bought new HEPA and Carbon filters and nothing.

I went on vacation to california early this month and while on leave my dad suggested i take his Hamilton True Air off his possession since my cat dander was really bothering me.  So after careful and extreme packaging skills i had it flown back with me down in Key West.  My problem now is it wont stop and i have a tough time believing the unit was damaged during the air travel.  My dad said there was a trick to getting the unit to function again.  I just don't know how or what to do to even know its working.  Sad.. I really need this 150 dollar beast to operate cause i dont want to give up my lil furball.  Thanks!

Thank you sooo much.. I did mean that my unit did not start at all but i fixed it by finding which part of my unit was not getting the pressure point touched. It seems the front end of the unit had a chipped plastic part not hitting the pressure plate and upon inputting a cut cardboard piece i was finally able to activate it. Thank you a ton!

I'm not exactly sure what is the problem with your unit since in the title you say it won't start, but in the body you say it won't stop!

If it won't stop just unplug it. I'm assuming that's not your problem though.

If it won't start check the 2 safety interlocks. These automatically stop the unit when you take off either the front cover or the top cover. (This is so you don't stick your fingers in the fan while it is running and sue Hamilton Beach.)

On my unit the top one stopped working because the small plastic tab on the bottom side of the top cover broke off. This tab is designed to press into a switch inside the unit when the cover is properly installed. I over rode the switch by placing a small folded up piece of cardboard into the switch slot and taping it in place. This activates the switch full time. The only drawback is the unit will not shut off automatically when the top cover is removed. This could be a problem if you have an inquisitive toddler or child around the house. I only recommend this modification if you don't have small children around!

The front cover has a similar interlock and can be disabled in much the same way.

I hope this helps.

I have been looking to buy an air purifier and people keep telling me to get a HEPA. What does this mean?

HEPA is a type of air purifier. It stands for high-efficiency particulate air. To qualify as a HEPA filter by government standards the filter must remove 99.7% of all particles larger than 0.3 micrometers from the air. The following site lists the top 10 HEPA purifiers available online -

I want to change filters. please help

Hi and welcome to DixYa, I am Kelly

The only two parts requiring any service are the activated carbon pre-filter and the HEPA filter. No tools are needed. To change either filter, disassemble the unit as shown.
1. Loosen the carrying handle by turning it counterclockwise and lift filter cage cover from unit.
2. Lift HEPA filter and activated carbon pre-filter from the base.
3. Remove the fasteners from the activated carbon pre-filter and remove it from the HEPA filter cartridge.
4. Replace filter(s) as needed, and discard used filters.
5. Wrap the activated carbon pre-filter around the HEPA filter cartridge and secure it with the fasteners provided

Are there filters that have to be changed and where do you get them?

Yes. You will have a prefilter and after that you will have a HEPA filter. Keep good maintenance on the prefilters which are not washable. You will need to check it once a month to see if it is time to replace. If you have good maintenance on the unit and change the cheaper prefilter, you will get years of service out of you HEPA filter. Bad maintenance means replacing the HEPA filter which is a good chunk of the cost of the purifier.

Where and how can I order new filters.

You never need to ORDER new filters for your SUN AIRE purifier unit. Our pre-filter is LIFETIME/WASHABLE 0.5 micron 2-stage electro-static and NEVER needs replacement. Our pre-filter saves you about $100-200 per year in expensive replacement HEPA/charcoal/carbon filters on other units. Made in America and built to last you a lifetime- SUN AIRE purifiers!

Bionaire Hepa filter

The carbon filter should have the air passing through it first, before the hepa filter. The carbon filter removes the large particles which would otherwise block the hepa filter very quickly. Contact these guys if you need more help; Hope this helps :)
